George Voinovich Obituary

Former U.S. Senator from Ohio George Voinovich died Sunday at the age of 79, according to the Associated Press. His wife Janet confirmed that Voinovich died peacefully in his sleep.

Voinovich, a Republican, was a member of the Senate from 1999 to 2011. Before being elected to the Senate, he was the Governor of Ohio from 1991 until 1998 and the Mayor of Cleveland from 1980 until 1989.

In his 2004 re-election to the U.S. Senate, Voinovich received more than 3.4 million votes, nearly 64 percent. No other candidate in Ohio’s history has received as many votes as Senator Voinovich did in 2004. Also in 2004, he won all 88 of Ohio’s counties, something accomplished only once before.

Voinovich was born in Cleveland and went to law school at Ohio State University.

He was considered a moderate Republican. He questioned the war in Iraq and opposed President George W. Bush’s tax cuts.

To the family of George Voinovich. Collinwood High School was honored with the attendance of all the Voinovich family. George was very special to my late mother, Nancy Walden, and I'm sure she and George will "watch over" all the Slovenian friends and family members in Cleveland. God rest his soul. I am Robert L Herbold SR the son of the late Richard (Dick) and Estelle Herbold.
I was born June 1964 in Cleveland Ohio, we where neighbors of the then up-and-coming mayor, Governor, and Senator George Voinovich in the 60s on Crestland Rd. I was surprised and saddened over his passing away. Just 12 months ago I tried to get in touch with him just to tell him how much I admired his success. I tried to call as well as sent him a letter and email to congratulate him on his accomplishments, but was very unfortunate not to be able to get a response from him. His assistant from the University could not give me a reason why, I was very frustrated and deeply disappointed not to even say hello and actually tell himhow I felt, I was very proud of him. that's one phone call I wish I could have had. Even for just one or two minutes. It would have meant the world to me, that's the impact he had on me.
We are so sorry for your loss and I know he was a great family man!
His public service to the state and Country was well served. What a journey and Legacy rest in peace Senator Voinovich Robert Herbold and family

I am a lifelong Ohio Democrat who voted for Mr Voinovich every time he ran for office. His integrity, his sincere wish to make his city, state, and country a better place to be, and his respect for all people he served made him a person I was honored to vote for. I shook his hand several years ago while I was supervising a group of juvenile offenders working at Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus. It was as though he was shaking the hand of a friend. He thanked me for my service to youth! He cared about all children and supported efforts to improve their lives. We were privileged to have such a honest and caring individual representing us.

R.I.P Heaven's Gained Another Angel.

My condolences to the family of George Voinovich.
In Remembrance of him he was a great and honorable man. George stuck by his people and done his job. We appreciated being able to call upon him when street were bad in the winter and holes needed to be repaired or balk trash had to be picked up from the curb. He always made sure our city kept in order the way it should be ran. This Man will be deeply be missed by many and no one could or would ever replace his kind and loving heart. May he forever rest in peace...Heaven's Gained Another Angel.

To all the Voinovich, you have our deepest sympathy. Whe Senator Voinovich was Governor, I had to call him and have him fight my late Aunt Concetta Berardinelli from threats from Immigration about being deported (she had been living in this country for over 75 years, became a citizen when she was 8 years old but Immigration said they had no record of her). She came to this country from Italia when she was 6 years old and became a citizen a couple years later. She was in a nursing home in Carey, Ohio dying. I sent then Governor Voinovich the family history (with pictures) and an explanation of the situation. Within a week, I heard from him and that he would help with the situation. A week later, a letter arrived from the Immigration Board that her "papers" were found-and they did acknowledge Governor Voinovich's support. Three weeks later, she passed away. I received a kind letter of sympathy from Gov "V" as I called him.
God has called home another Angel. Thank you Senator for all your kindness and support. Such a gentle soul.

To the Voinovich Family,
As a young Latino, the then Mayor saw potential in me that I didn't see in myself. Serving in the Mayor's OEO department, he always made the Hispanic community a priority in Cleveland's social, economic, and political development. There has never been, nor will there ever be, a greater advocate of our community.

Thank you Boss, for all you gave to us spiritually as well. As a fellow Catholic, there was no political voice greater than yours at all levels of government for our Church.

June 14, 2016

Senator Voinovich was a government leader who served for all the right reasons. He left Cleveland and Ohio better places than when he began his decades of service. He was a humble man who never forgot his roots though he worked shoulder to shoulder with the most powerful leaders in the nation. He always voted his conscience, at the risk of alienating even members of his own party.

But, his greatest legacy is his family which will carry on his values for generations. His life will be an inspiration to not only current and future leaders but parents who put their families first.

There is a joyful side to his passing. It means he will be reunited with his beloved Molly and a brother he truly loved.

We treasure the memories of the time we spent with the Voinovich family and will keep you in our hearts forever. God Bless You.

Dear Mrs. Voinovich,
We wish that our sincere condolences may help, in a small way, to lighten your burden. We all share in the loss of a good man, who always was ready to help his city and community. We remember with gratitude, the many times Mr. Voinovich was ready to be seen at our functions, and promote the causes of Eastern Europe in general. It will be with great regret, that we have to remove his name from our masthead, as an Honorary Board Member... a position by which we all were, in return, honored.
On a personal note, I feel I have a personal connection with the Governor, through my niece,Kathi P.,who never ceased to tell us his praises.

As a young man in 1971 and 1972 working at Higbees men's suit dept. George became one of my best customers. It was many years later later before I moved to phoenix that while waiting for a flight to Arizona at Hopkins airport some one tapped me on the shoulder. It was one of ( I believe mayor or he may have been Governor ) Voinovich's security people and he asked me if I would like to sit with the governor on the flight to phoenix. ( it was either a mayors or governors pow wow he and wife Janet was going to) he upgraded my ticket to where he was sitting, and I had the most wonderful conversation and flight. What a sincerely warm man. RIP George Voinovich a true Cleveland mega hall of famer.

Janet and Family: God be with you and assuage you of the loss of the Servant of God George. Thank you for sharing him with the public and his Republican Family, his sacrifice of personal time for the greater good of all was substantial and many great accomplishments resulted.

Above all, George Victor Voinovich was guided by the Light of The Holy Spirit, and that showed through in everything that he did in word, deed, and thought. His faith places him with our Lord and Savior, and we pray that we will be reunited with him, but he set the example of God, Family, Nation for all to follow, and had a profound and positive impact on all he touched, and everyone whom he benefited.

Words cannot express what George meant to all of us as individuals and collectively, but you knew more than anyone of his inherent goodness.

God be with you this day and every day, may he preserve and protect you, and may the inspirational life of the newly departed Servant, George, grant hope, charity, and love to you each and every day.

Dear Janet and the Voinovich family,

More than fifty years ago, my father Chappie, introduced me to George Voinovich who was then running for Cuyahoga County commissioner as a man worth following for one interested in politics. That candidate took the time to have an extended chat with a youngster who was not yet old enough to vote.

I have never forgotten that occasion. His exemplary life and career was one which set a high standard and made us all proud to be Clevelanders.

May he at last find the peace he has truly earned.

It was a pleasure and an honor to meet Mr. Voinovich, when I was a teenaged life guard at a swimming pool in Cleveland. He worked for the City of Cleveland then and just stopped for a visit, in 1965. My Dad also worked for the City of Cleveland at the time, after he hurt his back as a meat cutter. Dad always thought highly of Mr. Voinovich and so did I...and that genuine smile of his lit up everywhere he went! I always knew he was a "What you see is what you get" man. I was very happy when he was Governor of our State of Ohio, and then into the Senate. What a great man in every way! I've always admired and loved him. What a treasure he was to our State of Ohio and to the USA. Now, he's God's treasure and truly our loss. May you rest in God's peace, Mr. Voinovich.
