What was Paul Rudd thinking when he made this really bad 00’s Hong Kong action film...
A bleached blonde Paul Rudd plays an FBI agent who does kung fu and fights a robot. He even got to say a few lines in Cantonese.
The main characters looked more like popstars than cops and there’s an awful lot of overacting going on. The CGI is atrocious.
The movie was good for a laugh and nothing else.

He sure was lost in the weeds when he made this one.
He wears a suit one size too big, speaks Cantonese, and has to share the screen with three annoying as hell pop stars (who have done good work elsewhere). The anything-goes style is pure 2000 cheese that's my kind of meal (even if I'll make me sick afterward).
I realize calling something "watchable" doesn't mean all that much coming from me at this point, unless I maybe specify where I'm coming from. For one I like Paul Rudd, robots, Hong Kong cinema, and things that are dated like the ReBoot level CGI in this thing. All of that together should add up to something... I don't wanna say better, but at least more consistently entertaining. So y'know, only bother if your brain is wired to prioritize weird over "good."

Take 2 Fast 2 Furious's major studio appropriation of early 2000s youth culture, mix in the x-treme ""not your daddy's secret agent"" vibe of xXx, serve it up with some classic Hong Kong slapstick histrionics, add in Paul Rudd in a role I am desperate to ask him about, and filter it all through a truly awful dub, and you have Gen-Y Cops... This should be good-bad fun, but all the characters are all such irritating shitheads.

Nobody normal acts that way.
Intrigued by how this movie released in the year 2000, is trying to emulate the "Whoa, radical!" style of "cool" in America from the nineties, and yet the filmmaking and overall style is more in-line with late-eighties action schlock. It results in a film that feels like it has no exact location in time or space, an anomaly. It's then unfortunate that it all results in a movie that's mostly just either a slog or annoying lol. I wanted to check this out when I saw it featured a baby-face Paul Rudd with a haircut dangerously close to blonde frosted tips. (Rudd's character at one point makes a joke about Roseanne Barr being elected president…
This is, without doubt, one of the best movies ever made.
Paul Rudd has the best blond hair and should speak Cantonese and perform martial arts more often.
Edison Chen has a career ahead of him, with Stephen Fung and Sam Lee look like they are having the time of their lives.
Christy Chung continues her reign on film to become the next Jennifer Aniston.
Richard Sun was clearly inspired by one the best actors ever: Rufio from HOOK.
The CGI is such a standout that REAL STEEL copied it years later.
I can't recommend this film enough to film lovers out there!

generally very similar to its predecessor (which in turn is generally very similar to andrew lau’s young and dangerous films) except this has notorious nude collector edison chen fighting a military robot hand-to-hand and paul rudd chewing up the scenery as White FBI Man, which is probably the best White FBI Man performance in all of hong kong history - if only because paul rudd had acted in at least one other movie at the time and wasn’t a random tourist the producers had pulled off the street. all-in-all, pretty OK! and especially worth it if you want to hear White FBI Man chew out some cantonese in one final mind-blowing twist (he could speak cantonese the whole time??? 🤯)…
Anton Corbijn did a great job with Control, sure, but there’s something refreshing and unexpected about this early-career Paul Rudd depiction of Ian Curtis’ life.
I only watched Gen X Cops 2 (aka Metal Mayhem, aka Gen X Cops 2: Metal Mayhem, aka Gen Y Cops) because I wanted to see Paul Rudd with bleached blonde hair playing an American asshole in a ridiculous early 00's Chinese martial arts cyberpunk movie. And boy oh boy, did I get what I bargained for.
