We love escape rooms and do several per year. We just did Laboratory on Ice and WOW, that experience took escape rooms to a whole new level. The story and theming were the best we've seen; the puzzles were interesting, varied and unique and everything worked well. Our game tech was also super friendly and carried the story very well.
Of note, Laboratory on Ice does require some basic German knowledge. The attic rooms can be played fully in English (we were told).

The second stop on our escape room tour on Sunday and thus escape room no. 255 was "Murder in the Attic - the Marie Katharina File" at Nexus Exit in Gelnhausen.

After we had successfully mastered the first part "Murder in the Attic" in July 2023, we now returned to the scene of the action. And that is actually to be taken literally, because both adventures take place in the same setting.

That is why Nexus Exit recommends letting a few months pass between the two adventures.

But one thing is for sure: even if both cases take place in the same setting, the second part is by no means a series of deja-vus. This is due to the fact that both cases are in two different genres. While in the first part we were still investigators who had to solve a murder, the task in the second adventure is much more mysterious. Because now it's about going into the fifth dimension to free the ghost of the murdered woman from the attic.

First of all, however, we have to travel back in time and this journey through time alone is a spectacle in itself. Anyone who has never played at Nexus Exit has no idea how it actually comes together to form an overall experience after entering the location. The briefing was carried out by Dr. Dr. Prof. Dr. Prof. Jane, who was supported by her assistant Nadja, who unfortunately does not yet have an academic degree. The appearance of these two alone was worth the money. But that is exactly what makes the overall experience at Nexus Exit.

I spoke to Lex Lüpke in the ERNC interview about how the implementation of having two escape rooms in one setting was designed. I can definitely only warmly recommend the interview again at this point.
As in the first part, we are carried through the story along a common thread in the form of puzzles. The puzzle structure is linear, which makes sense here, as you only gain access to all the information over the course of the game.

For the most part, the solutions to the puzzles lead to combinations of combination locks, keys that are found open further locks and, of course, there are also some technical puzzle implementations.

The scaredy-cats among you can be assured that this is more of a supernatural adventure and not a scary room. We played the second part with a slightly different team formation, but this was no problem. Jana and Daniel were quickly brought up to speed by the Nexus Exit Team during the briefing.

"The Marie Katharina File" is a standalone adventure. Which part you like better probably depends on your individual preferences in terms of genres.

Even though the level of difficulty was increased compared to the first room and we needed a little nudge from Dr. Dr. Prof. Dr. Prof Jane now and then, this adventure was still a lot of fun. Communication with the group takes place via a highly developed technology that looks a little like the walkie-talkies of our time.
In the end, we were able to complete this adventure with about 11 minutes left and thus free the ghost of Marie Katharina from the attic.

We were then greeted by the most competent employee at Nexus Exit, Christian Lay, and then sent through the time travel portal again. On this second visit to Nexus Exit, there was also the opportunity to talk to Christian after the game and we were given some exciting insights behind the scenes of this really very unusual escape room provider.

All in all, a clear recommendation

We successfully solved the breakout and had a lot of fun. We were also able to solve the murder in the attic in the summer. A great team, great ideas, great escape room..

It was a teen's birthday party on a smaller scale, a few more people might be a bit tight. But of all the escape rooms in the Rhine-Main area, it's the best so far, we've been to 4 so far. The team on site are really good at their roles. Puzzles aren't too difficult, good help.
Well, if you're out with two blind "chickens", help doesn't help either, but that's another topic. :-)
