Accurate film portrayal of a reluctant hero. A must see!

Sergeant York, starring Gary Cooper, portrays the early life and remarkable military career of Sergeant Alvin C. York. Raised in the backwoods of Tennessee, he was headed towards a destructive path in life when he experienced a religious conversion and became a sincere Christian. Drafted during WWI, he struggled with the moral and religious implications of killing enemy combatants. He applied to become a conscientious objector but reconsidered after deciding that military service was not incompatible with his faith. In both real life and the movie version, his courage, marksmanship skills and humility were legendary. Deployed in Europe, his unit was assigned to capture a German machine gun position. As his fellow American soldiers fell to German fire, York crept up on the German position - without being harmed, against all odds. He killed several Germans, then openly approached and persuaded the Germans to surrender. Remarkably, he returned with 132 German prisoners. He came back to the US as a hero and was awarded the Medal of Honor. He refused business offers, preferring not to profit from the war experiences. However, grateful community members gifted land and a home to York and his young wife. The places are real. You can visit the Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Park in Tennessee, which preserves the original farm, businesses and school that he later built. Yes, Hollywood took a few small liberties here and there - maybe he didn't really get struck by lightning when he found the Lord - but the film is remarkably accurate. A rare thing in Hollywood war films.

Trivia Fact: Fentress County has NO school tax. He donated funds to build schools with the caveat that there never be taxes levied on county citizens for said schools. That stands today.

I had seen the story of Sergeant York back in the 1950's, and it had stuck with me. I wanted to go back and see it again. Gary Cooper playing the role won accolades, but none compared to Sergeant York on his return from the War. It is a great story of a hero, a true hero, unmatched by his contemporaries for its basic goodness, of sound character, of accomplishments, of an ordinary man.

This product shows the original black and white film but with closed captioning. It also has both a short biography of York, and of Gary Cooper, both worth a look (but without closed captioning)

It is time well spent in honour of a great American veteran, and in getting reminders of some sound lessons to pass to our children.

Great product delivered on time, great packaging, good buy!
