The Detroit Lions set NFL record after another long, game-losing field goal

If it feels like this season has been uniquely tormenting to the Detroit Lions, it’s because it has been. What the Lions have gone through in the past three weeks alone has been record-breaking in so many ways.

As pointed out by ESPN’s Eric Woodyard, this may be the most unbelievable of the Lions’ heartbreaking fate. On Sunday afternoon, the Lions became the first team in NFL history to lose twice to regulation-ending field goals of 50 yards or more in a single season. Three weeks ago, the Lions lost to a record-breaking 66-yard field goal from Ravens kicker Justin Tucker. This week, it was a 54-yarder from Minnesota Vikings kicker Greg Joseph.

What’s frightening similar about both is that they came under ridiculously similar situations. Against the Ravens, the Lions had just taken the lead with only 1:04 left in the game. Against the Vikings, there were only 37 seconds left after Detroit had scored the go-ahead two-point conversion. Against the Ravens, Tucker set a career-high with the 66-yard kick. Joseph broke his career-high of 53 twice against the Lions on Sunday—first with a 55-yard kick, and later with the 54-yard kick.

And to top it all off, both games ended with the exact same score of 19-17.

To put it simply: the Lions have gone through as many heartbreaking finishes in the past three weeks as any NFL team has ever in a single season.
