      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Though packed with Don DeLillo's witty dialogue and bolstered by strong performances, particularly by lead Michael Keaton, Game 6 also suffers from uneven direction and overwrought symbolism.

KB B It was interesting but got a little tedious. Watch if there's nothing else on. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/19/24 Full Review John P Loved this film for reasons mostly not mentioned: it's calm, loving depiction of quintissential "New York" from a bygone era of pay phones, random run ins, chatty/friendly cabbies, neighborhood barbershops and un-tarnished baseball (read pre-steroids and prima donnas). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/24 Full Review Steve C Sorry, no home run here. More boring than a slow baseball game. "Lost games; lost dreams;" ... lost time... haha Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/09/23 Full Review steve d Sort of a proto-Birdman. It just barley does not work because of the weak script. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/20/23 Full Review Audience Member It's pretty good, ya know? I like Keaton a lot. He's a fine actor, often truly special. He's a master of the physical act of a wave of the hand, a shake of the head, but mostly his facial gestures express so much without a word. And he's on his game in this one. It's what I call a 'small film' to a degree, despite the setting and outré feel at times. Griffin Dunne's character seems rather unnecessary, and annoying. Nice to see Bebe Neuwirth all hot n' bothered in next to nothing. Downey's acting was a throwback to early 90's Downey. Harlow, O'Hara & Yulin are all strong here (there are no small parts, just small people: anon?). Don't go and put it on some 'must see' list. But if you come across it on cable or streaming some night, maybe pullover for a while, let the engine cool, and give this a whirl. 3.1 stars Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Game 6 is a movie about a playwright who is stressing out that a critic will give him a bad review and simultaneously nervous that the Red Sox will lose the 1986 World Series. No, wait, he’s not worried about the entire series yet, just Game 6?? It’s such a poor premise built strictly around the hindsight of knowing how the Red Sox self-destructed in that specific game. They even cop out with the main characters at the end just saying “Well, that means they’ll lose Game 7 too.” The most frustrating thing about Game 6 is that it is so indescribably BORING! I fell asleep 3 times while watching and had to rewind to find that I missed nothing. It should be a crime for a movie to be able to take funny and charming actors like Michael Keaton and Robert Downey, Jr. and turn them into such lifeless characters. They are clearly having no fun, and they don’t even bring sarcasm or humor to these downtrodden people. They are depressing to watch. I’m not sure what the point was of Game 6, but they failed at whatever they were trying. The film is almost unwatchable. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/22/18 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Andrew O'Hehir Salon.com For fans of DeLillo, Keaton and/or either team in that classic Series, this curious little picture is worth tracking down. Mar 18, 2013 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader For better and worse, this is a fiction writer's movie: the dialogue is admirably precise, yet the restrictive worldview that's so gripping in DeLillo's books seems like mere solipsism on-screen. Mar 21, 2011 Full Review Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle Game 6 is ultimately a curious dud, although it makes us anxiously await DeLillo's next time at bat. Rated: 2.5/5 May 6, 2006 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...the picture suffers from an arms-length feel that continually prevents the viewer from working up much interest in or enthusiasm for the central characters exploits... Rated: 1.5/4 Feb 26, 2022 Full Review Ray Pride Newcity It's much more than a curiosity, and if any of this description appeals to you, you know it's a movie, regained, that will hold your attention however much a novelist's voice often drives the flow of the picture. That DeLillo kid? He sure shows promise. Rated: 6/10 Aug 26, 2021 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com DeLillo, despite the flaws in his first screenplay, shows remarkable promise in writing for the big screen.
