M.I.A. - KALA

Discussion

I am just posting some stuff I don’t see on here already.

I don’t know what to say about this album other than it’s incredibly well done and catchy. The hit single is iconic.

From Wikipedia: Kala is the second studio album by British hip hop artist M.I.A. It was released on 8 August 2007 by XL Recordings. M.I.A. named the album after her mother and said her mother's struggles in life are a major theme of the recording. It was mainly written and produced by M.I.A. and Switch, and features contributions from Timbaland, Diplo, Afrikan Boy and The Wilcannia Mob.

M.I.A. initially planned to work with American producer Timbaland for the bulk of the album, but was unable to gain a long-term work visa to enter the US. She hence recorded the album at numerous locations around the world, including India, Angola, Trinidad, Liberia, Jamaica and Australia. M.I.A. and Switch relied heavily on the digital audio workstation Logic Pro and recorded additional vocals and background sounds outside the traditional studio environment. Kala incorporates prominent influences from South Asian music, featuring samples of Bollywood and Tamil cinema. The album draws on various styles, from funk carioca to African folk. The songs are about political themes related to the Third World, including illegal immigration, poverty and capitalism.

I asked my wife to get me this album for my birthday last week. I did not receive it. However she gave me $200 for "records" as she knows RSD is always near my birthday.

I will be getting this from Amazon if my local shops don't have a copy of it.

The best pressing of this record is from Vinyl Me Please, the sound on their version is a cut above every other vinyl pressing if this album, the VMP version will blow your head off. Trust me, get it.

Got to work and checked VMP (OOS) and then Discogs. I have a copy on the way (sealed) for $55. Not terrible. I could have saved a bit by buying a dinged corner copy, but it wasn't worth the few bux to have one arrived dinged up.

Awesome you’re gonna love it, incredible sound

“Bamboo Banga” is my high intensity workout jam. I have it on repeat a few times before I move on to the rest of the playlist. XD

I always liked Boyz.

Worth mentioning she’s a complete idiot. Great album though!

kinda sucks she milkshake ducked herself so completely, but damn, Arular and Kala are bangers.

love this M.I.A record

The reissue comes with a side of truffle oil

Seriously though, ...she synthesized a mashup of sounds and genres that changed everything for me.

I'm so fucking glad she didn't end up working with Timbaland on more than one track.. his contribution was the weakest one, easily. That signature style of his was everywhere (and unavoidable) at that time - and sounds so tacky and dated to me, now. There's the odd one I don't mind, still, but that last gasp he did with Madonna in 2008 should've been the last thing she did (my opinion, of course). Even managed to make Chris Cornell sound like a goober; that takes talent.

She did not know that Paper Airplanes sampled The Clash. I shit you not.

Omg I have this album and the cover is shiny!!!!!! I got this record from a family member and I wasn’t the biggest fan of the album (other than Paper Planes because I grew up with that song) but I grew to like it. But other than the music, it’s a very aesthetically pleasing album!😍😍😍

I believe the shiny one is the VMP edition.

Oh nice! Me and one of my second cousins started talking about vinyl collecting a lot and he had subscribed to thing thing that gave him a record every month, and he gave me two of those records that were just collecting dust in his shelf. He gave me Kala and Turn On The Bright Lights by Interpol, both excellent albums in their own way.

Point being… I didn’t know it was some special edition one!!

Turn on the Bright Lights collecting dust? That album will change your life.

I guess it just wasn’t his taste🤷🏻‍♀️

But I personally LOVED that album, I wish I could experience listening to it for the first time again

This was one of those "perfect albums" of my youth. I couldn't believe that she was Sri Lankan / South Asian. Was a big deal for us kids.

She also had great songs afterwards like Jimmy and Bad Girls and of course, Borders.

I bought this when it was released. She fell off so fast after Kala.

Mala is actually pretty cool aesthetically and has some bangers imo

Is this post AI generated? It's practically screenshots, with copypasta from Wikipedia as the text? What the fuck are we doing on this sub any more?
