The uncle of an executed murderess relates four stories of his hometown, Oldfield, to a reporter. In the first, an elderly man pursues a romance with a younger woman, even to the grave and beyond. In the second, a wounded man on the run from creditors is rescued by a backwoods hermit who holds the secret to eternal life. In the third, a glass-eating carny pays the ultimate price for looking for love on the outside. And in the fourth, a group of Civil War soldiers are held captive by a household of orphans with strange intentions for them.

Jeff Burr and Darin Scott’s From a Whisper to a Scream is a prime slice of bizzaro 1987 cinema and I’ve never been able to shake it’s cruddy little mean spirited world since.
Different twisted tales all revolving around a small town that I hope I never end up in... bizarre monsters, disgusting relationship scenarios, glass eating carnival macabre, and civil war irony. My favorite of the bunch (also known as the alternate title for this movie, The Offspring) stars an unhinged Clu Gulager. It’s pretty gross and all kinds of disturbing as he ramps up the creep factor 100%, what a national treasure he is.
I love all of these segments and easily put From a Whisper to a Scream high on my list of favorite anthology films.

I do love horror anthologies, but when I saw this was directed by Jeff Burr, I wasn’t expecting much. I like his stuff, but nothing has ever blown me away. Turns out that this is one of his better ones and I was pretty entertained throughout. The segments vary in quality just like any other anthology horror.
The second segment featuring Dr. Crews as a lowlife who gets involved in voodoo was probably my favorite while the 3rd segment about a carnival glass eater and his doomed lover was the least interesting. All of the stories contained a nice healthy dose of blood and gore so really none of them were bad.
The wraparound was definitely my favorite. Sure Vincent Price was a big part of that love, but every single second Susan Tyrrell was on screen was 100% pure bliss. That woman is magic.

From a Whisper to a Scream delivers four grimey tales of terror, with a wraparound featuring the great Vincent Price. This one sets itself apart from a lot of its contemporaries because it's all so serious, with a thoroughly nihilistic streak. The film focuses on the town of Oldfield - apparently a place where terrible people do evil things. The stories are each inventive and well realised. Some well placed gore and a cerebral undercurrent make for a satisfying experience. The first story gets off to a slow start, but it builds nicely and that shocker of an ending really packs a punch. Between this and Tales from the Hood, Darin Scott is an anthology master and I’m really glad this got the Blu-ray treatment... now it’s yearly viewing. There’s a really awesome story in the special features about how they got Vincent Price to be in the film, and if ya ask me it’s totally worth a purchase just for that!

Creepshow’s inbred cousin. Holy smokes is this just plain fucking bizarre and mean and gross and gory and weird and depressing as all get out. I should have known something was askew the moment poor old Clu Gulager showed up in a ridiculous pair of coke bottle glasses doing the acting of 10 ordinary men. He, like everyone else in this cast, is really going for it, man. The performances run the gamut of the only-sort-of going for it of Terry Kiser to the dear-lord-in-Heaven-dial-it-back-a-bit going for it of Rosalind Cash.

One could not ask for a better town historian & librarian than Vincent Price, especially if your town is one in which many many terrible and well-documented events have occurred. That all events relayed in this film take place in Oldfield, TN throughout its past, from the relatively recent to the days immediately after the Civil War, give a cohesive Southern Gothic flavor to all of the tales. Although I would never want to visit Oldfield after seeing what goes on there, I very much enjoy Vincent Price telling me about it. A strong wraparound horror host makes for a better anthology film than one without and that is certainly true here. My favorite of these stories is the Civil War…

It is not a coincidence that voodoo, a religion of the oppressed, is almost always represented as evil. This film presents it differently, but not really very respectfully. While it plays it off as a just deserts scenario, it still goes for a more cartoonish depiction, one that plays on stereotype and leaves out the substance of the faith. It is a disservice to the oppressed to coopt their culture in this way. Doing so in the same film that presents a Civil War scenario with demonization of the Union Army (in a context devoid of the wider understanding of the war, race, or class struggle, though) is a juxtaposition that suggests a level of bigotry. Finally watched this film that I always knew as The Offspring.

holy fuck!!!!!
I really, really loved this.
“I can still see you.”
Went from hysterically laughing to saying “oh...well damn” within minutes.
The perfect amount of creepy and gory to make anyone happy & has made its way up to my top 5 horror anthologies. I’m incredibly impressed and really happy (lol?!)
That second story was so fucked up (they were all fucked up), easily my favorite of the 4 (I enjoyed each for their own reasons) but that teary bloody eye was so perfectly eerie!!!
I really feel like I’ve been missing out with this one.

Hauntingly surreal horror anthology starring Vincent Price. Price plays the uncle of an executed inmate who tells various stories about his town Oldfield. We are taken on a strange journey through several bizarre stories of murder, monsters and the macabre.
Lots of crazy stuff goes down in this film and it has that absurd 80s feel. Unpredictable and unique this film goes from comical and quirky moments to harsh and gory scenes before you know it. Some of the cheesy elements overstay there welcome sometimes and I found some of the stories to get a little carried away. Guess that's just part of the charm of 80s horror though! It's a fairly low budget film that has a gritty feel to it. Which makes it seem even more raw around the edges. A film that is really brought to life by the Scream Factory Blu.
Worth a watch for people into the weirder horror anthologies out there.
