French Open final: Djokovic v Murray

That is the question isn't it?

Tennis is usually about the rivalries - Borg v McEnroe, Edberg v Becker, Federer v Nadal.

Right now, it is Djokovic against history.

And he is winning that contest quite convincingly as well.

Andy Murray speaking to ITV 4: "I was disappointed obviously, it was not the result I wanted but Novak played extremely well  

"I almost managed to find a way at the end of that fourth set to keep the match going but it was not enough. 

"When you are playing the best in the world there are going to be times when they raise their game and after I missed break point in the first game of the second set he loosened up a bit." 

Andrew Priestley: The 2016 calendar Grand Slam is really on for Novak. Who would bet against him winning the 'Golden Slam' with the Olympic title?

Sho Rahman: Same old story for Murray. Has to somehow find a way to stay with Novak for more than a set if he's to win more slams.

It always feels like a little sop to the runner-up that though.

Those photos never seem to see the light of day once the shutter shuts.

Then Murray is asked step aside and give up the spotlight to the main man.

"Djokovic is almost inhuman. He's mentally so tough and I can't see anybody getting through him at Wimbledon."

Novak Djokovic: "I want to start off by saying congratulations to Andy for a great tournament, and it was a great pleasure to share these special moments with you. 

"I'm sure we will see you with the big trophies very soon. My family, my team, my loves, thank you so much for tolerating everything on a daily basis. 

"It's one of the most special moments of my career and I want to thank everyone here for their support - thank you from my heart, and I hope to see you next year."

Andy Murray: "Firstly I'd like to thank my team and all of my friends and family who came. I'd like to thank all the crowd, it was a fantastic atmosphere today. 

"Congratulations to Novak's team - you deserve it, well done. To Novak, this is his day. What he's achieved, the last 12 months is phenomenal, winning all the Grand Slams in one year is an amazing achievement. It's so rare in tennis, and for me personally, it sucks to lose the match, but I'm proud to have been part of today."

Very dignified words from a very fierce competitor.

Andy Murray has kept a brave face through the trophy presentation, now though a microphone has been thrust into his face.

No interview questions to lean on either.

Murray begins with an apology for his lack of French, wise move.

Novak Djokovic strides up to finally lay his hands on the trophy that has escaped him for so long.

He offers the Coupe des Mousquetaires up to the heavens and then clasps it tight to his chest,

There are tears as well,

So here is the roll-call for the the record-keepers:

• Djokovic has become just the eighth man - and 2nd oldest - in history to complete the career Grand Slam after Andre Agassi, Don Budge, Roy Emerson, Federer, Rod Laver, Nadal and Fred Perry. 
• Djokovic is only the third man in history to complete a non-calendar year Grand Slam. Rod Laver was the last in 1969, with Don Budge also achieving the feat.
• Djokovic is only the fourth player in the Open Era (after Roger Federer, Goran Ivanisevic and Ivan Lendl) to win a specific Grand Slam tournament after having lost their first three finals at that Grand Slam event. No man has ever won a Grand Slam title after finishing as runner-up at the event four times.

Novak Djokovic: "It's a very special moment, the biggest of my career. It's nice to see the sun has finally come out after ten days of rain, and it was great to see many fans for this final and I hope you enjoyed watching our tennis. I felt today something that I never felt before at Roland Garros, I felt the love of the crowd, I drew the heart on the court, like Guga [Gustavo Kuerten], which he gave me permission to do. My heart will always be with you on this court."

There are some concerned faces in Camp Murray.

Mother Judy is looking down at her son, who is sitting absolutely gutted after a long, grueling and ultimately empty-handed French Open campaign.

"Another immaculate Novak Djokovic performance. He was clearly feeling the tension in the first set, but things changed so quickly at the start of the second set. Murray looked like he was running on empty. Djokovic looks as if he's playing on remote control, he can put the ball where he wants, and he's got the reward his talent deserves."

"This has been the tricky one for Novak Djokovic. But he's come out and played some great tennis. He's rock solid, he knows his game so well and he's mentally focused. From where he started off in this match to where he finished, what a contrast, and it just goes to show how great a champion he is."

Novak Djokovic's celebrations are crowd-pleasing and extensive.

He scratches a heart on the court surface in homage to previous winner Gustavo Kuerten, hands his sweatbands to the front row and recruits all of the ball girls on duty for the final to send his love back to the Philippe Chatrier crowd.

The drama.

Novak Djokovic with a bad case of white-line fever, struggling to take the final step over the threshold and into the winners' enclosure.

Murray hanging tough to deny him just a few minutes longer...or is this the start of something far greater?
