"They've greenlit it into production, I've met the head writer, and they're assembling a team that seems really good!"
Lincoln Peirce

Big Nate is an American CG-animated streaming television series that premiered on Paramount+ on February 17, 2022. It was developed by Mitch Watson, and it is based on the Big Nate comic strip and book series by Lincoln Peirce. The series is produced by John Cohen Productions and Nickelodeon Animation Studio. It was originally scheduled to debut in September 2021 on Nickelodeon, but it was delayed due to COVID-19. It would finally make it’s Nickelodeon debut in September 2022, just one year after the show’s original supposed premiere before getting delayed & moved to Paramount+.

On March 28, 2024, the show was removed from Paramount+, and delisted permanently from all platforms, going as far as to wipe any traces of the show off the Nickelodeon website.

Development

In 1991, when the first Big Nate Comic was published, Lee Mendelson paid Lincoln Peirce $5,000 to write a "bible" describing the characters and outlining a few story ideas to make a 2D-animated Big Nate television series for Saturday Morning Cartoons at NBC. This idea was shelved for a long time, although being in consideration to be made several times. Finally, in February 19, 2021, an animated TV series based on the comics and books was announced, after a long time in "development limbo", an expression used in the media industry of a project or idea that has been in development and consideration for a very long time, in this case being 29 years. In a news release, Nickelodeon's executive vice president of animation production and development, Ramsey Naito, stated that she had wanted to adapt the Big Nate book series into an animated series for a long time.

The animation model for Nate was leaked on October 15, 2020. On March 18th, 2021, during the Nickelodeon Virtual Upfront Show, the original release month was announced and the bio was also announced. In December 2021, the casting was finally confirmed, as well as the new release date: February 17th, 2022.

On March 24, 2022, the series was renewed for a second season of 10 episodes. On August 3, 2022, it was announced that 10 additional episodes were ordered for the second season, which premiered on July 7, 2023.

Several original sets were done in house due to COVID-19; Technicolor and Xentrix in India helped out with the rest of the animation production, similar to fellow CGI Nicktoons Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years and Rugrats.
