The Alexandria Library invites all interested to join a conversation group to practice English and gain confidence. No registration is needed. Just come!

ACPS Annual Poetry Ceremony

All ACPS families and staff are invited to our annual Poetry Ceremony where we will be honoring overall winners from each school, division grade-level winners and more! Alexandria City’s Poet Laureate will also be presenting.

RecFest 2024

Sat. May 4, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Armistead L. Boothe Park (520 Cameron Station Boulevard)

The City of Alexandria presents RecFest! All ages can attend this free event full of family fun, with activities representing the City’s fitness, sports, enrichment, arts, nature, out-of-school time and summer camp programs. Enjoy demos, meet instructors and staff and register for programs and camps on-site.

Pre-K-8 Summer Learning Registration Deadline

Sun., May 5, 11:59 p.m.

We are looking forward to providing another hands-on summer learning experience for our students that focuses on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in grades K-5 and Career Exploration in grades 6-8. Current students in grade eight will also have the opportunity to participate in Music, Theatre and Dance and/or Health/PE Nine in-person camps. High school in-person summer learning is only for students who need credit recovery courses. Visit the ACPS Summer Learning webpage for details.

Community Cookouts

The Alexandria Police Department is hosting 12 community cookouts throughout the city between April and July. The cookouts are sponsored by various nonprofits and city agencies.

The following cookouts in May will be held 6-7:30 p.m.

Days of Remembrance

Mon., May 6, 12 - 2 p.m.

Marketplace Square (301 King Street)

Mayor Justin Wilson and members of City Council will light a candelabrum that the late Holocaust survivor Charlene Schiff and her husband, Ed, donated to the City. The 54-inch high, solid brass candelabrum was donated in memory of Charlene Schiff’s parents and sister, and the six million Jews and millions of others who perished in the Holocaust. The Schiff candelabrum is also made available to schools and civic groups studying the Holocaust.

Fallen Officer Wreath Laying Ceremony

Tues., May. 7, 9 - 10 a.m.

Waterfront Park (1 Prince Street)

During National Correctional Officers and Employees Week and in honor of National Police Week, the Alexandria Retired Police, Fire and Sheriff Association, the Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office will hold a wreath-laying ceremony at the fallen law enforcement officer memorial at Waterfront Park at The Strand and Prince Street.

Navigating EdPlan Connect in VA IEP (Virtual)

The Special Education Parent Resource Center invites families to a virtual workshop to learn how to use EdPlan Connect to help manage their child’s special education documents. Eco-City Festival

The Eco-City Festival is a free, family-friendly event where you can take part in fun games and activities to learn more about environmentally friendly practices and interesting programs happening in our community!

Title I Division Spring Family Meeting (Virtual)

Tue., May 14, 6 - 7 p.m.

The Office of Professional Learning and Federal Programs is seeking two to three representatives from each Title I school to review the proposed 2024-25 Title I budget and provide feedback on the use of funds during the spring meeting. A Zoom link will be sent to all those who sign up online.

Preparing for Your Future: Transition Fair

Wed., May 15, 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Alexandria City High School (3330 King Street)

The Office of Specialized Instruction invites ACPS students with individual education plans (IEPs) and their families to its 2024 Transition Fair. Starting at 5:30 p.m., learn about community partners and resources over pizza and ice cream. Then at 6:30 p.m., participate in important mini-workshops on supporting the transitions from middle school to high school and from high school to life, college and career. Families of students with IEPs can register at www.acps.cc/TraFair.

ALIVE! Pop-Up Food Distributions

ALIVE! is a local not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing emergency and basic needs support to children, families and individuals living in poverty and with hunger in the City of Alexandria. ALIVE! will distribute bags of food to Alexandria City residents. No ID is required. Make sure to check out the ALIVE website for more information about the Food Hubs.

Join the Charles Houston Recreation Center for free food, family-friendly competition and quality time together. A variety of activities are available for families to enjoy together including board games, gym games and the game room.

Cultural Observance Days

On weekdays, these are regular school days. However, these days should not have assessments, sporting events, and other school sponsored special activities. Any missed assignments due to student absences on these days can be made up without penalty.
