Frances Smith has led a rather uneventful life, which did include studying ancient and modern history at Oxford. The combination of a lifelong passion for classical history and the consumption of large numbers of fantasy novels led to the creation of the Divine Empire, with its many Greco-Roman stylings.

When not exploring fantasy worlds, Frances works as a data analyst in the Life and Pensions industry.

If you are like me then your head is constantly abuzz with new ideas, either related to your current story, to a future one, to something completely different to anything that you are currently writing. Writing it down gets those ideas out of your head and pins it down on the paper - making way for all new ideas! So it's a sisyphean existence, but cracking fun.

I would also be remiss if I didn't mention the joy of knowing that other people have read and enjoyed your work. Just the idea that your story, your characters, can reach out and touch another person the way that they touched you is nothing short of marvellous. (less)

You have to keep pushing it up the hill while you wait for the wheels to grip, as it were. Similarly, you have to force the words out onto the page and hope that inspiration will strike, or you'll get to the next pre-planned plot point, or something. They may not be very good words, but that is what second and third draught editing is for. (less)
