Once upon a time, too much time watching Netflix felt like the worst, laziest kind of parenting you could do.

A sign of lost values, a sad replacement for books and board games.

And, well, it’s probably still a little bit true. But lo – now there’s a ‘Worse Thing To Fret About‘.

We’ve moved on to peak individual-device-land.

A place where everyone has their heads firmly fixed downwards watching something else by themselves, and any chat is reserved for someone on your contacts list.

As the mother of a few pre-teens, two primary kids and another one nursery-aged, I want to champion a return to those halcyon days of communal TV-watching that I remember from my childhood.

Everyone in pyjamas, some with wine, some with milk, lights low, radiators and dogs and cushions aplenty.

So, we’ve done the hard work for you.

We’ve reclaimed our own slice of early evening and have road-tested and binged on the best family shows on Netflix.

We’ve arranged it into four sections:

• Netflix Baby Shows
• Netflix Kids Shows
• Netflix Shows For Tweens (which will also work for teens)
• The Best Nextflix Series For Teens and Young Adults (all rated 15 and above and dealing with mature themes)

A word of warning – I’ve decided (well, me and the research – wouldn’t want to take all the credit) that watching violence is no good for kids.

However, a bit of tasteful, consensual, kissing bits won’t do them much harm.

Therefore, we haven’t shied away from TV that confronts some slightly grown-up issues, provided it has been approached in a sensitive, respectful way.

Sometimes it takes confronting an issue to open up a dialogue with your kids, and we all want that, right?

And the best Netflix shows to watch with family offer some of the best writing for all ages, within reason.

The adult-appropriate jokes will be lost on the younger ones who just like the musical numbers and the glitter.

And when it gets a little too much, just send the youngsters off to bed one by one and settle down for some big-kid cultural bonding.

Orion + The Dark (PG)

A new series featuring a brave teen and her five schoolmates.

They must bond with unicorns and unlock their magical powers at Unicorn Island to protect their beloved magical academy.

CoComelon Lane (U)

CoComelon Lane follows JJ (speaking directly to audiences for the first time) and his best friends as they experience – and celebrate – life’s special milestones.

From the excitement of going to a friend’s house for the first time, or learning how to take care of a pet, to the scariness of visiting the dentist for the first time, kids can relate to the big moments in each episode.

Dee & Friends in Oz (U)

Dee & Friends in Oz is a fantasy adventure musical for preschoolers.

A young girl named Dee discovers a wonderful magical land of Oz, where she meets new friends and is challenged to save the day, and save Oz.

Leo (PG)

Adam Sandler delivers signature laughs in this coming-of-age animated musical comedy about the last year of elementary school – as seen through the eyes of a class pet.

Jaded 74-year-old lizard Leo (Sandler) has been stuck in the same Florida classroom for decades with his terrarium-mate turtle.

When he learns he only has one year left to live, he plans to escape to experience life on the outside but instead gets caught up in the problems of his anxious students — including an impossibly mean substitute teacher.

It ends up being the strangest but most rewarding bucket list ever…

Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir, The Movie (PG)

Supa Team 4 (PG)

Join four teen girls living in the neo-futuristic African city of Lusaka, Zambia who are recruited by a retired secret agent still committed to saving the world.

In their journey from schoolgirls tackling homework to undercover superheroes fending off supervillains, they’re transformed from a motley crew of friends into Supa Team 4.

We love family tv shows on Netflix that are more diverse and inclusive.

Sonic Prime (PG)

The action-packed adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog go into overdrive when a run-in with Dr Eggman results in a literal universe-shattering event.

Desperate to piece his prime reality back together and save his old friends, Sonic races through the Shatterverse, discovering strange worlds and enlisting new friends in an epic adventure of a lifetime.

Nimona (PG)

My Dad the Bounty Hunter (PG)

My Dad the Bounty Hunter follows the hyper-space adventures of two kids who discover their seemingly average dad is actually an intergalactic bounty hunter.

Family bonding hits warp speed as they dodge dangerous aliens and lasers galore to get home before mom finds out!

Gabby’s Dollhouse (U)

Gabby and her kitty friends go on a rainbow puzzle hunt and attend DJ Catips ‘Super Think Camp.’

They solve riddles to earn super capes and a dress-up adventure leads Gabby to excavate a glow-in-the-dark gem mine in the Wild West.

StoryBots Answer Time (U)

Niah, Ari, Ellie and Jax are members of Team Zenko Go.

Prince of Peoria (U)

Terrible English accent aside, Gavin Lewis is entertaining as Emil, an exchange student in the USA who’s also a Prince.

If Emil looks familiar, it’s because he was ‘Moody’ in Amazon’s Little Fires Everywhere.

Boss Baby (PG)

A continuation of the hit film, The Boss Baby is competing for cuteness with rivals that change throughout the season.

Teen Titans (U)

Teen Titans Go! is an animated series that follows the adventures of the young titans living in Jump City.

When they are not saving the world, they’re just living together as teenagers.

No Good Nick (PG)

If you’re looking for a family series to watch about family, try the Thompson family.

The Thompson’s open their doors to a teen who says she has no family. They have no idea she is a con artist looking for revenge. 

Archibald’s Next Big Thing (U)

Based on a children’s book, this animated family series focuses on Archibald the chicken and the crazy adventures he goes on.

1. Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (PG)

This new animated series follows a group of six teenagers attending an adventure camp on the opposite side of Isla Nublar.

When dinosaurs wreak havoc across the island, the campers must band together in order to survive.

We suspect it will impossible to tear your dinosaur-loving crew away from the TV.

2. The Floor Is Lava (PG)

A TV show based on the kids’ game can’t be any good right?

Wrong! It’s funny, addictive and ridiculous!

3. Team Kaylie (PG)

Teen celebrity Kaylie must now embark on a new adventure: a court-ordered middle school wilderness club.

Swapping glamour for the wild? Classic fish out of water scenario in our opinion.

4. Family Reunion (PG)

A feel good, soapy sitcom with acting legend Loretta Devine, rising star Talia Jackson and 90s queen Tia Mowry.

This is a good, clean one and of the best Netflix series to watch with family if you’re looking for something to suit a wide age range.

5. Ada Twist, Scientist (U)

A series following the adventures of eight-year-old Ada Twist, a pint-sized scientist with a giant-sized curiosity, who aspires to discover the truth about absolutely everything.

With the help of her two best friends, Rosie Revere and Iggy Peck, Ada unravels and solves mysteries for her friends and family.

But solving the mystery is only the beginning because science isn’t just about learning how, why and what – it’s about putting that knowledge into action to make the world a better place.

6. Miraculous (PG) follows clumsy Marinette aka superhero Ladybug and her crush Adrien who is her fellow superhero Cat Noir.  

They try to fight off Hawk Moth whilst trying to live normal lives as teens and having to keep their identity a secret.

7. Lemony Snicket A Series of Unfortunate Events (PG)

A favourite of tweens and teens, Lemony is one of the most popular Netflix family shows.

The series follows the unfortunate lives of the Baudelaire orphans as they encounter villain count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris) who will do anything to get his hands on their fortune. 

8. Carmen San Diego (PG)

Sing along to the fab theme tune and follow your un-stereotypical thief and her friends trying to stop stealing from villains VILE.

They use some pretty cool gadgets as they encounter former classmates as she tries to learn about her origin.  

9. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (PG)

She-Ra and friends are back with more adventures in this animated show.

What will these incredible characters get up to next? Anything is possible with Aimee Carrero.

10. Llama Llama (U)

Llama Llama is back with more adventures for the lovable llama, his mum and his friends in this beloved kid’s show.

Damsel (12)

A dutiful damsel (Millie Bobby Brown) agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt.

Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her wits and will to survive.

XO, Kitty (12)

Inspired by the popular To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series, teen matchmaker Kitty Song Covey thinks she knows everything there is to know about love.

But when she moves halfway across the world to reunite with her long-distance boyfriend, she’ll soon realize that relationships are a lot more complicated when it’s your own heart on the line.

Next In Fashion (12)

Fashion designer and TV personality Tan France is joined by new co-host, supermodel and style icon Gigi Hadid.

Can anyone play a better Wednesday than Christina Ricci?

Jenna Ortega has Christina’s blessing so it’s certainly worth watching to find out.

Raising Dion Season 2 (12)

If you’re looking for family friendly shows on Netflix, try this.

Love On The Spectrum (12)

A docuseries full of memorable characters all navigating their love lives and their autism.

Fatherhood (12)

In this heartwarming, funny and emotional true story, Kevin Hart stars as a widower taking on one of the toughest jobs in the world: fatherhood.

Tissues at the ready!

Never Have I Ever (12)

In this coming-of-age comedy, Indian American teenager Devi continues to deal with the everyday pressures of high school and drama at home, while also navigating new romantic relationships.

Anne With an ‘E’ (12)

A newish contender as a Netflix family series suggestion– this is one for everybody, not just those who grew up with the Anne series and the excellent Canadian TV show of the mid 1980s.

This version, filmed on Prince Edward island – a kind of supplementary character in itself –  is a little darker and doesn’t shy away from hinting at Anne’s earlier childhood abuse and neglect.

It’s also charming and has wonderful storytelling with a fresh, feminist bent.

Anne is feisty and quick-tempered and eccentric and all my boys were totally hooked.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (12)

This show didn’t sound very much fun when a friend recommended it to me – it’s a New York-set show about cops who work together in the 99th precinct – but it is so good.

The cops who work together are led/driven nuts by funny guy Detective Jake Peralta who always has to win at any cost.

The premise is that the crummy precinct has just been taken over by a very serious, hard-to-please Captain and everyone is doing their best to impress him while competing against each other to solve cases.

There is a lot of hammy crime fighting and really rubbish criminals, an office roller derby, awkward office relationships and a receptionist who is only interested in entering dancing competitions instead of answering the phones.

It’s funny and quirky and will teach your kids about the importance of working in a team, even though you can barely tolerate anyone individually.

Enola Holmes (12)

Millie Bobby Brown shines just as you imagine she would as Enola Holmes; a plucky teen searching for her missing mother (Helena Bonham Cartner) and trying to outsmart her famous brother, sleuth Sherlock Holmes.

In Season 2, Enola is a detective-for-hire like her infamous brother.

She takes on her first official case to find a missing girl, as the sparks of a dangerous conspiracy ignite a mystery that requires the help of friends — and Sherlock himself — to unravel.

Good Times (15) Released April 12

The original Good Times TV show made history in the ’70s as television’s first Black two-parent family sitcom.

The animated reboot will drop the laugh track and deal with modern-day issues, retaining the feeling of the original Good Times.

 “It’s about a Black family that comes together, laughs together, and survives the system on the South Side of Chicago,” said showrunner and executive producer Randa Shepard.

“What you’ll get from that is a lot of social commentary, a lot of pushing the boundaries, a lot of feel-good television, but also a lot of things that may be in the vein of The Simpsons and South Park and Family Guy.”

The Beautiful Game (12)

Mal (Bill Nighy) is the manager of England’s homeless football team, taking his players to Rome with the hope of being crowned champions of the Homeless World Cup, a global street soccer tournament.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (15)

Centred on Queen Charlotte’s rise to prominence and power, this Bridgerton-verse prequel tells the story of how the young Queen’s marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the Ton inherited by the characters in Bridgerton.

African Queens: Njinga (15)

From Executive Producer Jada Pinkett Smith comes a new documentary series exploring the lives of prominent and iconic African Queens.

The first season will cover the life of Njinga, the complex, captivating, and fearless 17th-century warrior queen of Ndongo and Matamba, in modern-day Angola.

The nation’s first female ruler, Njinga earned a reputation for her blend of political and diplomatic skill with military prowess and became an icon of resistance.

Your teens (and their friends) are probably all talking about it regardless. Season 2 is on its way.

Emily In Paris (15)

Emily In Paris is not very good (and if you’re French you may well find it offensive) but millions of people enjoy it so we’re including it here.

Season 3 is set one year after Emily moves from Chicago to Paris for her dream job and she finds herself at a crucial crossroads in every aspect of her life.

Faced with two very different paths, Emily will have to decide exactly where her loyalties lie — at work and in her romantic life — and what those decisions mean for her future in France, all while continuing to immerse herself in the adventures and surprising twists and turns that life in Paris provides.

She’s kinda annoying as she thinks she’s superior simply because she’s American.

In brighter news, some of her clothes are rather cute.

On My Block (15)

On My Block is a coming-of-age comedy about four bright and street-savvy friends navigating their way through the triumph, pain and newness of high school set in the rough inner city.

If your kid is doing GCSE or A’Level French get them to watch this in its original language French.

Subtitles optional.

You need to watch parts one and two for part three to make sense but Assane’s quest for revenge against Hubert Pelligrini has torn his family to pieces.

Now in hiding, Assane must learn to live far from his wife and son.

With the suffering they endure because of him, Assane can’t stand it any longer and decides to return to Paris to make them a crazy proposal: leave France and start a new life elsewhere.

But the ghosts of the past are never far away, and an unexpected return will turn his plans upside down.

If you want a smart family TV series on Netflix, Lupin is the one.

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (15)

This may well be our favourite Netflix series to watch with family.

OF ALL TIME.

So yes, it’s a family drama series on Netflix but the premise is pretty dark.

Kimmy Schmidt has been locked in an underground bunker since she was snatched at age 15 (Mad Men’s John Hamm, in fine, Machiavellian form).

She is finally set free just before she turns 30 and exits the underground all wide-eyed, sweetly naive and determined to be positive about everything.

She ends up living in a cupboard in a shabby New York City flat with Titus Andromeddon, her gay best friend who is a mostly out-of-work actor that bursts frequently into song, and her dodgy landlady Lillian who is both kind and clearly criminal.

Kimmy gets work as a nanny to socialite (and secret Native American Indian) Jacqueline and her dreadful, entitled, spoilt children.

It is a study in optimism, friendship, cartoony clothes and has a song title that will have you all shouting the lyrics in familial unity.

If you’re looking for good family shows on Netflix, try this.

Arrested Development (15)

This is an underrated, underseen comedic gem about dysfunctional families who love each other anyway.

Perfect for teens with an adult sense of humour, it’s one of our favourite family drama series on Netflix.

Firstly and importantly, it stars the brilliant (and quite fanciable, if you like that sort of thing) Jason Bateman as Michael Bluth, the bewildered and frustrated son who ends up becoming responsible for resurrecting the disgraced family business.

The sprawling and formerly wealthy Bluth family are all now living all together in a Bluth show home that keeps falling apart, and every member seems intent on spending the last of the family fortune despite Michael’s hard work to save the business.

There’s:

• an itinerant uncle and incarcerated father
• a lazy twin sister
• a terrible magician brother
• a permanently sozzled and acerbic mother
• younger cousins who share a room and one of whom feels he is in love with the other
• invisible girlfriends
• a psychiatrist-turned-actor brother-in-law who is a self-confessed ‘never-nude’ and can only shower in cut off denim shorts.

It is shot like a reality TV show, but one that features Liza Minelli and Charlize Theron as various Bluth arm candy.

It’s a masterpiece and a total delight.
