This place has a lot of history but it was so dirty when I visited. The ground was covered in garbage, broken beer bottles and looked like there’s some construction going on. Also, when you entered the place, there are these “guides” who tries to pretend they are legit but totally scammers. When you don’t want a guide they just following you around and tries to harass you the entire time. And outside the fortress area, there are many random men sitting around harassing women in the middle of the day. I really hate it. It’s a gross place with people acting disgusting towards a solo female traveler. I used to come to the DR a lot but a few of these type of incidents happened to me that i will stay away from this country as far as I can.

Well if it wasn't that from the headline, I would rather advise to spare your time and not go out of your way. But, as everything else in Zona Colonial it is in a short walking distance from other attractions, you'll need half an hour for the visit and there's a very cheap entry fee.
For sure you've seen much larger, more interesting and better preserved fortresses, but the fact this is the very first one on the continent makes it worth that 30 min. It was strategically built at the confluence of Ozama river to Caribbean sea, and is one of the very first structures in SD built even before the famous Alcazar.

The fort is an ancient piece of history that you should visit if you're in the area, but honestly there's not much there and very little signage or guides to explain things. It's fun to explore on your own and climb the stairs to the top but once you're up there you won't find much reason to stay long. Beware, if you go in the middle of the day, it's very hot. The day we were there a giant outdoor light broke off and crashed to the ground just a couple of feet from a group of us. Lucky it didn't hit anyone.

A medieval jail, watch tower and actual powderkeg built in a renacentist XVI century city. The first in America. Full of sad history, of torture experience, but a monument to be seen.

Some say it is a building in the middle of an empty block. In fact, IT IS NOT!!!
Just think how someone, 500 years ago, built a fort out of Coral Reefs and it has resisted perfectly until now. Look around and try to understand their defence tactics and how important defending your territory was at that time.
This is one of the most interesting monuments in Santo Domingo if you are willing to understand its history. You may spend 10minutes there, but if you like it, 2 hours wont be enough.

We found a guide at the fort (Antonio Mejia) known as the Professor. Before we hired him he began to tell us the story behind the fort. Starting in 1502 through the 1960's and Trujillo. He was able to relate the almost continuous wars that took place in the 16th through 18th centuries. Your experience in the fort will be greatly enhanced with a guide and will be much, much better if your Spanish is good.

The oldest medieval fortification in the Americas, Fortaleza Ozama is well worth the $2 ticket. The river and ocean views from the tower are beautiful. The Guides give the impression that they come with the ticket, but they do not. Negotiate the price BEFORE they start leading you around or you'll get ripped off.

Went in as part of a tour. At the entrance, though, there are several other guides offering their services. Frankly, not necessary. There's not much to see, except when you climb to the top of the tower and get an amazing view of the river opening to the Caribbean.

Nice place to walk through, with pretty views. We actually had a guide walk us through and tell us the history ( but totally unnecessary )
