Janyna M. Mercado, Ph.D

Neuropsychologist

After 17 years serving our military personnel at Brooke Army Medical Center as a clinical neuropsychologist and faculty member, Dr. Mercado is solely focusing on the growth and development of the Neuropsychological Institute of San Antonio.  A proud member of the National Academy of Neuropsychology, Dr. Mercado is a past member of the Women in Leadership Committee and is affiliated with the National Academy of Neuropsychology.  Outside of her clinical practice, Dr. Mercado imparts her academic expertise as an Associate Professor at Trinity University.  She also presents at numerous national conferences and assists in the advancement of cutting-edge, patient-centered treatment plans.  With a formidable background in neuropsychological disorders, Dr. Mercado is recognized as a highly respected forensic consultant and sought-after expert witness.

Amber Fahey Ph.D.

Neuropsychologist

Dr. Amber Fahey is a clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in neuropsychological assessment of adults. Dr. Fahey obtained her Ph.D. in Medical-Clinical Psychology (neuropsychology emphasis), at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She completed additional training at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, in Tampa, Florida. After completing her internship, she completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship at the Audie L. Murphy VA, here in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Fahey is experienced in assessing a broad range of conditions including dementia, autoimmune disorders, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, behavioral problems, psychiatric illness, and a host of other medical conditions. 

Dr. Fahey’s clinical and research experience is broad. She is especially knowledgeable of cognitive rehabilitation, and has published peer review journals, abstracts, and a book chapter in the areas of cognitive rehabilitation and traumatic brain jury and epilepsy, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder and military sexual trauma. She has presented at numerous national conferences including the International Neuropsychological Society, National Academy of Neuropsychology, American Epilepsy Society, Organization for Human Brain Mapping, and Division 22 Rehabilitation Psychology, to name a few. Previously, she worked as a research assistant at the San Diego State Research Foundation, Veterans Medical Research Foundation in San Diego, CA, the Epilepsy Research center at UAB, and with TBI Model Systems at Spain Rehabilitation Center at UAB.

Dr. Fahey’s goal is to provide individualized care and help individuals better understand the source of their difficulties, feel empowered to make lifestyle changes if necessary, and/or take the necessary steps to ensure proper care and support for themselves and/or their loved ones. She achieves this through comprehensive evaluation, objective neuropsychological testing, psychiatric evaluation, and intervention provided during feedback.

Jamie Schaffer, Psy.D.

Clinical Neuropsychologist

Dr. Schaffer is a clinical neuropsychologist, Texas-licensed psychologist, and San Antonio native. She provides comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations to a variety of populations, including those with neurological, psychiatric, and developmental disorders. She has extensive experience working with interpreters and with their help, can provide evaluations in any language. Some of her favorite areas of practice include ADHD, dementia, and traumatic brain injury. She also has a speciality in doing pre-surgical evaluations for deep brain stimulation (DBS), epilepsy (including Wada testing and intraoperative language mapping), and normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).

Dr. Schaffer obtained her bachelor’s degree from New York University and both her master’s degree and doctoral degree from Yeshiva University in New York City. She completed her fellowship in neuropsychology at Harvard Medical School where she was mentored by experts in the field. Dr. Schaffer has also trained at many other top medical systems, including Columbia University Medical School, Weill Cornell Medicine, Northwell Health/Long Island Jewish, and the Bronx Veteran’s Affairs Hospital. Dr. Schaffer has published papers and presented at several national neuropsychology conferences on topics ranging from Parkinson’s disease to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Fiona Burrows, Psy.D.

Pediatric Neuropsychologist

Dr. Burrows is a licensed psychologist with extensive training and experience in pediatric neuropsychology. She received her undergraduate education in psychology in Australia after which she completed a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Alliant International University. Prior to her postgraduate training, Dr. Burrows worked as a psychologist in Australia providing services to children in rural communities. Dr. Burrows completed a formal two-year post-doctoral residency in pediatric neuropsychology at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas and was then employed as a Pediatric Neuropsychologist/Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at Children’s Medical Center and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. She has continued to provide neuropsychological services to children and adolescents in a variety of settings including schools under the Bureau of Indian Affairs and outpatient clinics that provide assessment and individual/group treatment. Since moving back to Texas, Dr. Burrows has provided pediatric neuropsychological evaluation services for children involved with child protection and foster care agencies, and currently provides assessment services for an outpatient developmental pediatrics clinic.

John Delatorre, Psy.D.

Psychologist

John Delatorre, Psy.D. is a licensed psychologist in Arizona and Texas. He earned his doctorate from Midwestern University – Glendale, an APA accredited program. He has Master’s degrees from Midwestern University – Glendale and Texas A&M- Corpus Christi. Dr. Delatorre completed his doctoral internship at a crisis stabilization unit and completed advanced training in forensic psychology. Dr. Delatorre provides therapy and assessment for a variety of concerns, including providing interventions to the severely mentally ill, individuals with significant trauma histories, and crisis interventions/de-escalation. He has training and experience in various assessments including: general psychological, risk/threat assessments, competency to stand trial and criminal responsibility, psychosexual evaluations, police and public safety, and immigration evaluations. Dr. Delatorre has presented on multiple topics in the community and at conferences and is available to provide training. He is a psychological analyst for television news and court shows. He also works in the community providing Psychological First Aid as a disaster mental health volunteer with the American Red Cross and is a certified clinical traumatologist.

Kathy Wefel, CCC-SLP, CBIS

Speech Language Pathologist

Kathy is a licensed Speech Language Pathologist in Texas and nationally certified with the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA). She attended the University of South Florida (USF) and graduated with honors in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders. In 2003, Kathy earned a Master of Science degree in speech pathology at USF. During her professional career, she has extensive experience with both the pediatric and adult populations in a variety of clinical settings, evaluating and treating the speech, language, voice, fluency, swallowing, and cognitive needs of her clients. She currently serves as the Director of Speech Therapy for a reputable home health company and additionally offers as needed support in treatment of patients with brain injury at a local inpatient and outpatient facility. Kathy joins NIOSA with a wealth of knowledge to support the best outcomes of the patients we serve.

Delia Munoz, MA, LPC-S

Licensed Professional Counselor

Delia Munoz has a BA in Education and a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She is a board certified Licensed Professional Counselor with a Supervisor designation for counseling interns. Delia has over 20 years experience working with youth, families, and adults in rehabilitative services, psychotherapy, and psychometric assessment. She has served as a drug study rater in pharmaceutical clinical trials, worked in EAP, and held a supervisor position for the local mental health organization. She is also experienced in forensic counseling and assessment. Delia is bilingual and provides assessment and therapeutic services in English and Spanish.

Johanna Becho

Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist

Johanna earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2001. She completed her graduate training in the Family, Couple, & Individual Psychotherapy program at Our Lady of the Lake University and graduated with a Master’s of Science in Family Therapy in 2017.

Ms. Becho has collaborated with an array of research teams in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at UT Health San Antonio from 2002-2019.
Adamant individuals are equipped to self-actualize in every facet of life, Johanna draws from Biopsychosocial-Spiritual framework to inform her therapeutic work. Her clinical interests include the intersection of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) & mental health, Value-Based decision making, Family Violence, & Motivational Interviewing.

Ms. Becho is a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in the state of Texas offering compassionate, culturally competent, bilingual psychotherapy to promote growth and healing for individuals, families and children.
She is a chosen mother to three young men and has been married for over 16 years.

Megan Marcom

Clinical Practice Manager

Megan Marcom is a Clinical Practice Manager with experience caring for patients, examining and interpreting medical records, developing and implementing care plans, and summarizing complex medical literature as former NICU nurse. In addition to her nursing experience in a Level IV NICU, Megan also has extensive experience in management, marketing and public relations. As a Clinical Practice Manager, Megan analyzes medical records, provides case management, legal invoicing, and scheduling.

She has received a Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as well as a Bachelors of Science in Economics with a Minor in Media Communications from the University of California at Davis.
