Metro vs Metrobus tips for 2023

Hi, I am coming down again on Tuesday this week. And I have used the subway before but it’s been years. I think my last trip I did quite a bit of walking and taxis. I did get ripped off at one point with a fake 500 peso note from the Chapultepec gift shop and then could not pay my taxi! . So I am interested in looking at the subway again. I’m staying at the Umbral Hilton and would likely walk ro the Salta stop or Isabel de católica if the metro is running. (There is a notice about a bus alternative.) tell me what’s new and the apps that are ideal. (The last post on the Metro is from 2019.) gracias!

When I was there in January, the bus alternative was the only option for the Salto del Agua and Isabel la Catolica stops. The green buses head west to connect to the Balderas metro stop, from which the metro runs to Observatorio. Balderas to Pantitlan is closed, and it looks like that will still be the case until at least May, per an article from 3/2/23 on Mexico Business News. Note that to head east, the bus stop was a couple blocks south of the metro (Fray Servando Teresa de Mier) due to one way roads.

The Metrobus (bus rapid transit) may be a good option, too. I never took it as I had trouble getting ahold of a metro card - the machines I saw were broken and they were out of cards at the metro station ticket windows, where I could buy a paper ticket for the subway, but you need a card for the Metrobus.

Uber was pretty cheap and easy - I used it a few times due to issues getting the Metrobus. I really do prefer public transit when sensible, but Uber is a good backup plan.

I had issues with Uber drivers accepting my ride, and then cancelling 20 minutes later. I use the metro and my feet to get around almost everywhere. The buses can often become just as much a sardine can as the train cars, so keep that in mind when traveling during rush hours.

This app is my go-to. I don't know if they have an iPhone version, but this works wonders: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yallaya.metrometrobus

Former poster AA posted this helpful guide to transit apps. It's a year old, but it should still apply'.

Do you know about the Metro/Metrobus app that you can put on your phone?

Uber is great.

And respect to Metrobus and Metro, I love the convenience of the Metro card, needed for bus but works for metro.

Re #6: A couple of suggestions to someone getting cancellations when trying to book Uber and wanting to know why is is to check the general traffic using Google Maps between the driver and you. Especially in CDMX, traffic congestion can quickly mean getting from point A to B in a timely manner had become impossible and the driver will cancel so you can rebook and hopefully have a quicker pickup.

Secondly, you might want to check out your passenger score to make sure the drivers have been reviewing you in a good light. Reviews are two way street, and if yours is low (4.5 is average) you may find it harder to get a ride. To check this, open the app and touch the menu. Your rating is the number displayed under your name.
