      Critics Consensus

Extremely one-sided in its indictment of the Bush administration, but worth watching for the humor and the debates it'll stir. Read critic reviews

      Movie Info

Michael Moore's political documentary uses humor and connect-the-dots investigative journalism to question the Bush administration's motives for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The film argues that President George W. Bush and his inner circle used the media to further an agenda that exploited the 9/11 attacks. The close ties of the Saudis to the Bush family, the cynical profiteering of corporations and a political elite beholden to special interests are all cited as elements of a corrupt system.

At the risk of making his film sound too preachy, Michael Moore examines with a lot of sardonic humor the causes behind one of the most shameful chapters in recent American history, creating an insightful and well-edited documentary that should be seen by everyone.

Moore's a bit of a showboater (And he always has been, so that's never surprising) so its difficult to always buy some of the confrontational and noticeably staged situations he presents. The anger that drove him to make this is probably the film's greatest asset as it still has the power to make me furious at the Bush administration.

Of course, it goes without saying that "Fahrenheit 9/11" is a sweeping slam piece against the Bush administration. However, it might also be Mr. Moore's most powerful film (yes, even better than his Oscar-winning piece "Bowling for Columbine"). Illustrating an acerbic commentary track with powerfully constructed visuals, "Fahrenheit", at some point, morphs into how Moore sees a failed and even harmful presidency. His blend of aural sarcasm with visual anarchy is stunning. In fact, unlike his other films, the most powerful sequences are when he sits back and lets the footage speak for itself, rather than making an example of the such footage verbally. In short, it's compelling, persuasive work, portraying Bush as a man simplistic in speech and inauthentic in manner. Finally, it also reminds us of why, for better or for worse, Moore is still one of the most valuable figures in politics: a populist whose outrage in this film are an exhilarating counterpoint to Bush's then-calculated speeches and the like. Old news by now, but still as sick and twisted as ever.

A documentary movie shouldn't usually be completely biased and one-sided like this, but Michael Moore has obviously done his homework and researched the subject matter deep enough and with enough attention to detail to make up for it's narrow mindedness. Or is it really? I never knew a documentary about one of the most horrific terrorist attacks in history and politics in general, could be unboring, informant, funny, and entertaining at the same time. That was until I saw Fahrenheit 9/11. It's a real eye opener and a funny one too.
