Night Moves

Robert's lawyer, Tony Silvercreek, attempts to get him spousal support since Frances was paid out after being let go at work. Frances' lawyer Elaine swiftly counters that her client is now supporting herself while trying to get her small gallery going, and that Robert called the cops on Frances.</p><p>The agreement allows Robert to have Tom and Lila over for dinner on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but they are not permitted to stay the night until he finds more permanent living arrangements.</p><p> </p> <p>Robert meets with his friend Craig and learns it's going to cost him way more than expected to complete work on his new home. Craig offers him a job on his construction crew in good faith. Later, Robert heads to the city to meet with an old friend, Peter, about getting back into finance at his firm. When the meeting proves unfruitful, Robert reluctantly accepts the construction job.<br></p><p>Struggling to find a place to live, Robert considers moving into a bachelor pad with former clients of Tony's. One tenant reveals that Tony is hooking up with Dallas. Needing a change, Robert shaves off his mustache.</p><p>Frances discusses plans for her gallery with Diane, who has recently invested in it. Frances insists the money is a loan and promises to pay her back.</p><p>Robert wakes up to discover Lila at his unfinished home. She tells him she wants to live with him — it's not fair that she can't see him as much as she wants. He explains to her that she has to wait until he finishes the house or sells it before she can sleepover again.</p><p>Robert drives Lila home and Frances is shocked her daughter biked that far in the middle of the night. Frances expresses her frustration that Robert gets to be the crazy, fun dad while she bears the bulk of the responsibility for supporting the children.</p> <p>Nick tells Diane that he wants to spend more time with her. To Diane's surprise, Nick reveals his plans to retire.</p><p>Frances tries to surprise the kids with a backyard trampoline, but neither child is interested. Frances gives it a go to get Tom and Lila to join, but instead, her kids head inside.</p></div>

Happy Now?

Attempting to connect, Frances asks Lila about at her school's upcoming culture night, when each student brings something that represents their heritage. Lila insists it's not a big deal and Frances shouldn't come.<br></p><p>Reaching a construction zone, Frances yells out to a worker to let them pass. The family is surprised to see the man is Robert. "Are you happy now?" Lila asks.<br></p><p>Robert struggles to bond with the other construction workers and invites them to grab a beer after work. When he mentions his recent divorce, they begrudgingly accept the offer. <br></p> <p>While walking to the train station with Dallas, Frances vents about Lila's recent hostility towards her. Dallas accidentally answers a racy video chat from Tony, and Frances is shocked and hurt to learn her best friend is sleeping with the lawyer who tried to destroy her life.<b></b></p><p>After seeing Robert's last name on the window of her gallery and all her mail, Frances is inspired to go to the records office to start the process of changing her name. The clerk gives her an overwhelming amount of paperwork. <br></p> <p>Frances arrives at Nick and Diane's for dinner and to her surprise, Diane has invited a fourth person — a handsome bachelor named Andrew. Andrew inadvertently sparks an argument between Nick and Diane when he awkwardly says he can't eat the duck that Nick's prepared.</p><p>Andrew quietly ushers Frances out onto the deck to let the couple finish the argument. He playfully warns her about the complications of online dating and tells her she's not the first person Diane has tried to set him up with.<br></p><p>Robert meets with an old flirtation, Janice, and when she prys about his sexual fantasies, he reveals he wants to have a threesome. She's eager to help fulfill his fantasy but strikes out finding a woman to join them because all her friends are at the school's culture night. Upon learning Robert is sad to miss the event because it's Frances' night with the kids, Janice insists school functions are neutral territory.<br></p> <p>While leaving a bar with Tony, Dallas drunkenly runs face-first into a "For Sale" sign. Tony flags down a cab to take her to the hospital and Dallas is taken aback by Tony's sudden sensitivity. Admitting she might have underestimated him, she reveals she wanted to meet to break up. Tony freaks out, insults her and leaves her alone in the cab.</p><p>Frances excitedly attends Lila's culture night, but realizes that she's been left off the family tree Lila made. Frantic, Frances confronts Lila about the tree. "It's always about you," Lila shoots back. Robert crashes culture night to Frances' surprise and she turns him away, furthering angering Lila. <br></p> <p>After Robert leaves, Frances causes a scene arguing with Lila, who accuses her of embarrassing her at school, being selfish, and disowning the family.</p></div>

Worth It

While Robert works on the oven, Nick apologizes for his behavior towards Robert and that he's "been a real god damn sh*t." They hug it out and have a beer together.</p><p> </p> <p>Andrew invites Frances over to appraise his aunt's art, but uses the visit as an excuse to ask her to dinner. Frances politely declines, reasoning that she "needs to be on her own for a bit." While appraising Andrew's art, one painting particularly stands out to Frances, but she doesn't recognize the artist. Andrew gives her the painting as a thank you.</p> <p>Diane meets Frances at her gallery and urges her to branch out beyond local artists, especially since they have only sold one painting. </p><p>A realtor, Jackie, sneaks in to get a preview of a house Robert is working on. She immediately knows it isn't for her and Robert suggests his house might be the one she's looking for. He gives her his contact information.<br></p><p>Feeling inspired by the painting Andrew gave her, Frances researches the unknown artist, "Sylvia MacDonald." Frances tracks her down and approaches Sylvia at the bank she works at. Sylvia reluctantly speaks with Frances and insists painting is the "most private thing" about her life. Frances tells her how her painting spoke to her and pleads to see more of her work.<br></p><p>The next day, Robert gives Jackie a tour of his newly finished home. Insulting his handiwork and design choices, she claims it's worth $100,000 less than his asking price. Robert furiously defends his house and declines her offer.</p> <p>Diane takes Frances to an artist's birthday party in the city to help promote the gallery. The buzz of the party is the host's Eliot Pelts sculpture on display. Everyone is in awe of the shiny sculpture, but Frances finds it incredibly generic. </p><p>Frances feels out of place at the party and wanders around, while Diane takes a marijuana edible and socializes. When Frances finds Diane, she learns that Diane has convinced one of her friends to loan them a Pelts to "take the gallery to the next level." Frances insists that she and Diane aren't partners, but she deeply appreciates her financial investment — leaving Diane feeling hurt and underappreciated.</p> <p>Frances leaves the party and shows up at Sylvia's apartment at 1 in the morning. She bullies her way into Sylvia's apartment and learns that Sylvia was previously represented by a gallery. Frances begs her to finish more paintings.</p><p>The next morning, Frances is shocked to discover the Eliot Pelts sculpture being delivered to the gallery.<br></p><p>Robert throws his back out and realizes he can no longer work in construction. In need of another source of income, Robert meets Jackie at one of her showings and challenges her offer. He causes a scene at the showing but gets her to admit she lowballed him with her initial offer and that she loves his house and handiwork. They negotiate and settle on an offer for the house.</p><p>Jackie tells her therapist that she thinks she's met someone — Dallas.</p><p> </p></div>

Ohio

She encourages Frances to "jump in the water and get wet," and swipes right, messaging one of the matches for her.<br></p><p>Robert drops the kids off at Frances's house and Tom tells Frances that their grandfather is in the hospital. Robert explains to Frances that his father, Frank, caught pneumonia and the doctor recommended he get there as soon as possible. Frances immediately recognizes the severity of the situation and offers to go with Robert to his hometown in Ohio. Robert says it's probably easier if he goes alone, but Frances insists that if he changes his mind she will get on a plane and be there.<br></p><p>Later at the gallery, Frances admits to Diane that she can't help but feel guilty she's not there to support Robert.</p> <p>Jackie gushes over Robert in one of her therapy sessions with Dallas, but Dallas warns her not to get overly invested in the relationship so early on.</p><p>When Robert arrives at the hospital his father is sleeping; he leaves the room and is surprised to see Frances there too. She notices Robert's frustration, but claims that he would do the same for her, he shouldn't have to go through it alone.<br></p><p>Robert asks Frances about the kids, and she tells him Diane will check in on Tom; Lila is staying with a friend.<br></p><p>Diane pops in to check up on Tom and awkwardly tries to bond with him. Tom blows Diane off, until he notices her fancy car. She lets Tom drive her car so she can shop and run errands.</p> <p>Frances and Robert reminisce about the best times they had in Ohio together over the course of their relationship. Robert leaves the hospital room to get some air, leaving Frances alone with his father. While he sleeps, she apologizes for not being closer to him and admits he means a lot to her because "you mean a lot to him."</p><p>On their way to the pharmacy, Frances and Robert joke about the first time he brought her home to meet his family. When they arrive back at the hospital, Robert's infuriating sister Cathy is waiting in their father's hospital room.<br></p><p> </p> <p>Cathy complains about Robert upgrading the cable package in the room which fuels a heated argument about their deep-seated issues — leaving Frances to desperately try and keep the peace.</p><p>When Robert's father slowly wakes up, he asks for Cathy, and Robert tries to hide his disappointment. Just then, Cathy comes bursting into the room and pushes Robert away so she can hug her father. Robert excuses himself to the bathroom and they can hear him punch the wall in anger.<br></p><p> </p> <p>Frances offers to get Robert ice for his hand and takes the opportunity to pull Cathy aside. She tells Cathy that she can finally be honest with her now that she and Robert are divorced. "By any measurable comparison, he's a far better person than you are," she says. As Frances finishes her rant, Robert steps into the hallway and hears her defending him.</p><p>Heading back to Robert's father's home later that night, Robert tells Frances he appreciates everything she did for him over the weekend. Frances kisses him, and the two have sex.<br></p><p> </p><p> </p></div>

Breaking the Ice

Dallas is skeptical when Frances claims her relationship with Robert has been more amicable since they slept together. Frances believes sleeping with Robert was the antidote.<br></p> <p>Driving away, Frances is shocked to see Tom driving by in an unfamiliar car — she quickly follows him and honks at him to pull over. Frances approaches and asks Tom whose car it is. He stumbles to form a believable explanation before saying, "You should talk to dad."</p><p>Tom tries to tell Robert and Jackie that Frances caught him driving Jackie's Tesla — and that she's waiting outside to talk to Robert. Jackie quickly takes the fall saying she gave Tom the keys so he could get his backpack out of her car, but Robert refuses to let her take the blame. He also doesn't want this to be the way Jackie and Frances meet. <br></p><p> </p> <p>Robert rushes outside to explain the situation to Frances. He asserts that Tom is grounded at his place and should be at her house as well, calling it "a full on double ground." Frances asks how he has a Tesla and Robert replies: "It's not mine, it's my friend woman's." Robert insists she isn't "a random woman," but admits he's only known her for a month. </p><p>Diane explains the Pelts sculpture to customers in Frances' gallery. She walks over to Frances and asks how she's feeling after learning about Robert's new relationship. Frances simply says, "If he's happy I'm happy." She explains to Diane that all she cares about is convincing Sylvia to work on more paintings.<br></p><p> </p> <p>Nick invites Robert over for dinner, but Diane is surprised to see that Robert has brought Jackie. Diane sneaks off to call Frances with an update and that Jackie calls Robert, "Robbie." Diane says she has a plan and hangs up on Frances, then takes a blurry photo of Robert and Jackie, and sends it to her friend.</p> <p>Frances briefs Dallas and asks her to stop by and get a first impression of her. </p><p>When Dallas arrives at their house, she is floored to recognize Robert's girlfriend as her patient Jackie — she never made the connection since Jackie called him "Robbie" in their sessions. She apologizes and explains it as "an unethical coincidence" and leaves.<br></p><p> </p> <p>The next morning, Frances sees Dallas trying to catch the train and runs after her. Frances prys for information on Jackie, but Dallas says she can't tell her anything because it would be unethical.</p><p>Frances arrives at the gallery to find Sylvia unloading her paintings. An overjoyed Frances encourages her to finish more paintings over the next month so she can have a full show in the gallery.<br></p><p> </p><p> </p> <p>Robert prepares Jackie to meet Frances at Lila's birthday party at the ice rink. Jackie decides to rip off the band-aid and introduce herself, skating out to the center of the rink to greet Frances before Robert even has his skates on. Frances, slightly taken aback by Jackie's passive aggressive ambush, thanks Jackie for coming. Jackie reveals that she knows Robert and Frances slept together in Ohio; she smuggly thanks Frances for divorcing him. </p><p>The party wraps up with everyone singing "Happy Birthday" to Lila. As they pack up presents, Robert thanks Frances for all the work on the party and for being cordial towards Jackie.<br></p><p> </p><p> </p></div>

Losing It

Through the cracked door, Robert spots Jackie's daughter, Ella. Robert is furious to discover that Tom started a physical relationship behind his back: "Of all the girls in the world, you have to pick my girlfriend's daughter?"<br></p><p>Over dinner, Robert tells Jackie how he awkwardly discovered that Tom and Ella are having sex. Jackie replies, "They're teenagers, that's what teenagers do." Jackie encourages Ella to explore her sexuality, and is happy she's dating someone nice like Tom — Robert is thrown by her cavalier reaction.</p> <p>Frances and Sylivia pull an all-nighter perfecting the layout of the gallery for Sylvia's show. Diane arrives to the gallery in the morning with coffee and asks Frances about how things are going with Andrew, with whom Frances has started a casual fling. Frances bawks at the inference that Andrew is her boyfriend.. Sylvia is taken aback when Diane mentions Frances' past affair with Julian. "You have more layers than I thought," Sylvia tells Frances. <br></p> <p>Lila asks Frances if she can dye her hair purple, and Frances refuses. Lila retorts: "So I'm not allowed to dye my hair, but Tom can have sex with Ella in Dad's bathroom?" </p><p>To avoid arguing, Frances and Robert decide to consult their former therapist about how to deal with Tom's relationship with Ella. In attempt to parent "separately, together," Frances asserts they should implement shared ground rules for their respective homes. They both agree that Tom's door stays open when Ella is over and she can only come over when an adult is home.<br></p><p> </p> <p>Robert goes to see Jackie at her place, but Ella answers the door. Robert awkwardly tries to establish the new ground rules; he tells Ella "you be you," but explains that she's more advanced than Tom. Later, Jackie storms into Robert's apartment and confronts him about his conversation with Ella. They don't see eye to eye; Jackie says she might be better off alone.</p> <p>Diane takes Dallas on a tour of the country club. The pair runs into Jackie, a former patient of Dallas, who confesses she really misses their therapy sessions. Jackie tries to discuss her fight with Robert, but Dallas opts not to give advice. </p><p>Robert drops Lila off at Frances' and Lila accidentally sees Frances and Andrew making out on the trampoline. Lila rushes back to the car and Frances runs after her, apologetic. Robert smugly comments: "Looks like your side of the street was up to something naughty."<br></p><p>Jackie apologizes to Robert and tells him she really wants to make their relationship work — and that Tom ended things with Ella.<br></p><p> </p></div>

Going, Going...Gone

Andrew reveals that his ex-wife cheated on him; when he asks what ended Frances' marriage, she can't bring herself to admit that she cheated on Robert. As they browse auction items, Frances spots a famous art gallery owner, Skip Zakarian. Frances introduces herself to Skip and musters the courage to invite him to her gallery opening. He takes her business card, but declines her invitation.<br></p><p> </p> <p>While Robert and Jackie prepare for an open house, Robert discovers a dead racoon in the upstairs bathroom. Jackie successfully distacts the potential buyers touring the house, Robert cleans up. The duo close the deal and Jackie suggests they officially go into business together flipping and selling houses.</p><p>Frances wants to cover up the Pelts sculpture for the gallery opening, but Diane insists it's still the gallery's main attraction. Frances receives a delivery at the gallery; she's shocked to find Skip sent a magnifying glass from the auction — which he outbid her for. Frances considers not accepting the gift, and Diane insists Skip is flirting with her and that Frances should stay on his good side.<br></p><p>On their way to Frances' gallery opening, Jackie talks business with Robert. She says she already spoke to her lawyer to get paperwork started —Robert argues that he should've been at that meeting, and opts to consult his own lawyer.<br></p><p>At the gallery, Frances gives Sylvia the magnifying glass to celebrate their success. Frances spots Skip in the crowd. She greets him and Andrew awkwardly follows her. Frances introduces Andrew to Skip and thanks him for coming. Robert and Jackie arrive at the gallery and they congratulate Frances.<br></p><p> </p> <p>Diane feels left out seeing Frances and Sylvia bond at the gallery opening; Nick feels inclined to give a speech about Diane's contributions. He removes the tarp from the Pelts sculpture and announces that he bought it for Diane. </p><p>Frances thanks Skip again for making the trip to the gallery; he asks her out, but thinking of Andrew, Frances unwillingly declines.<br></p><p>Dallas is excited to see Ted from the country club in attendance at the opening— especially because he accepted her date invitation earlier that day. She is disappointed to when Ted is there with his soon-to-be ex-wife, who is still his close friend. Dallas leaves the gallery, and Ted follows her out and assures her that his marriage is over; he kisses her.</p> <p>Frances cleans up after the gallery closes and Andrew suggests they celebrate back at her place. Still feeling guilty from Skip's dinner invitation, she tells Andrew that it may not be a good idea for them to get serious. </p><p>Andrew regrets telling her about his ex-wife's affair, he admits, prompting Frances to come clean about being unfaithful in her marriage. Andrew is disappoint with her dishonesty, but Frances defends herself: "It was a lie by omission." Andrew asserts his first impression of Frances as, "a walking disaster" was correct and storms out.<br></p><p>Frances takes Sylvia out for a celebratory lunch in the city. As they wait for the check, Sylvia reveals that Skip offered to host her next show at his gallery and to represent her exclusively. Frances is deeply hurt to learn that Sylvia accepted Skip's offer without speaking to her first — she had already talked to Sylvia about their next show together. Sylvia insists that Frances would do the same thing if she was in her shoes — she returns the magnifying glass and leaves the restaurant.<br></p><p> </p></div>

Alone Again, Naturally

Frances expresses it's been her dream to take the kids to Europe, but it's never been financially feasible; however, she agrees to consider it.<br></p><p> </p> <p>After Frances sees a large feature in the paper about Skip and Sylvia's new partnership, Frances ventures into the city to confront Skip. He says he doesn't have the eye or energy to do what Frances does, and suggests they work together. She declines his suggestion and returns the magnifying glass. </p><p>Jackie and Robert meet with a lawyer to finalize paperwork for their real estate partnership.<br></p><p>Frances bursts a pipe trying to hang a painting and Robert comes over to help repair the damage. Before leaving, he surprises her with a check for $75 thousand to repay her for supporting their family over the past two years. They have an emotional moment and kiss — Robert pulls back and quickly leaves.<br></p><p> </p><p> </p> <p>While strolling through an outdoor art museum, Diane encourages Frances to consider Skip's job offer. Frances states that she doesn't care about the money, she just wants to enjoy her work. She offers Robert's check to Diane, as repayment for Diane's investment in the gallery — Diane sees it as Frances' way of ending her involvement; Diane storms off and tells Frances to cab home. </p><p>Robert and Jackie shoot baskets and discuss their trip to Italy. "Do you know what would be fun to do in Italy?" Robert poses, "Get married." He explains that it's fast, but his previous marriage lasted a long time and still ended badly — he wants his future to start. Jackie accepts his proposal saying: "F**k yes."<br></p><p> </p> <p>Upset and angry, Diane gets drunk at a dive bar. When the bartender refuses to continue serving her, she drunkenly gets into her car and sideswipes other vehicles as she drives out of the parking lot. </p><p>Frances arrives at Diane and Nick's Memorial Day party; Diane ignores Frances' attempts to apologize. Frances awkwardly avoids Robert and Jackie — Jackie notices, realizing that Robert hasn't shared the news of their engagement with anyone.<br></p><p>While Nick gives a speech about his love for Diane, Frances eyes the many couples. Feeling alone, she excuses herself from the party. Robert follows her to the bathroom and tries to talk to her, but Diane pushes by Robert and reveals her drunken escapade to Frances — assuming and that the police cars outside are there for her.<br></p><p> </p><p>The group emerges to find the police putting Nick in handcuffs — he's embezzled over $12 million from his clients; he wasn't in retirement, he was in hiding. Everyone at the party is stunned, while Robert tells Frances: "Jackie and I are getting married." </p><p> </p> <p>Robert visits Frances at her gallery, and apologizes for springing the news on her.</p><p>Frances drives Diane into the city so she can visit Nick at the prison. Diane confronts Nick for lying to her. She never wanted him for his money, she explains, she loved him.</p><p>Frances wanders through the city and finds herself at a small art gallery. She asks a young painter about his work and gives him her business card. Feeling inspired, she calls Robert and tells him to take the kids to Italy and make sure to show them all the art the country has to offer.</p><p> </p></div>
