List of city and town halls in England

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of city and town halls in England. The list is sortable by building age and height, and provides a link to the listing description where relevant. Where the architect is not from the locality of the town hall, their hometown is included. The list, which was compiled using the list of 1,000 Largest Cities and Towns in the UK by Population, published by The Geographist, to ensure completeness,[1] includes over 700 surviving buildings. Notable examples of buildings which have not survived include the town halls of Kensington, Newcastle, Paddington and Sunderland. The oldest town hall, which was built as a chapel for pilgrims, is Dover Town Hall, thought to have been completed in around 1203,[2] while the oldest purpose-built town hall is Bury St Edmunds Guildhall, which dates back to around 1220.[3] The tallest town hall is Manchester Town Hall with a clock tower which rises to 280 feet (85 m).[4]
