Biografía

  • Esperanza Spalding is a Grammy award winning American jazz bassist, cellist and singer, who draws upon many genres in her own compositions.

Spalding's father is African American and her mother is of Welsh, Native American, and Hispanic descent. She has always had an interest in the music of other cultures, including that of Brazil commenting: "With Portuguese songs, the phrasing of the melody is intrinsically linked with the language, and it's beautiful." She has cited jazz bassists Ron Carter and Dave Holland as important influences on her music along with her true love for fusion music and was influenced by a "wonderful arc that started 40 years ago where people kept incorporating modern sounds into their music". Despite an obvious passion for music, her beginnings were not exactly easy, in fact at one point she was so broke and exhausted she considered leaving music and entering political science, a move jazz guitarist and composer Pat Metheny discouraged, telling Spalding she had "the 'X Factor'" and could make it if she applied herself.

She gained some brilliant exposure and publicity from the likes of The New York Times who commented that her voice was "light and high, up in Blossom Dearie's pitch range, and [that] she can sing quietly, almost in a daydream" and that Spalding "invents her own feminine space, a different sound from top to bottom." After her graduation, Spalding was hired by Berklee College of Music, becoming one of the youngest instructors in the institution's history.

Her first two albums failed to make impact on the US charts but were praised for the dynamic jazz Spalding exhibited. In November 2011, Spalding won "Jazz Artist of the Year" at the Boston Music Awards and Grammy Award for Best New Artist beating favourite indie rock band Florence + the Machine. After this success her album 'Chamber Music Society' re-entered the Billboard chart at #34 and topped the US Jazz charts, a huge gain on her previous release. It was the highest selling contemporary jazz album of the year. The following album 'Radio Music Society' cracked the US top 10 and once again topped the Jazz charts.

  • Esperanza Spalding

This was amazing. I love Esperanza Spalding and her amazing bass skills and the versatility of her style. I always listen to radio music society when I'm working because she's so soothing and upbeat. I never knew I could love her even more.

I saw this show in San Diego and she was essentially in collaboration with SDS for their summer pops festival. The beginning was somewhat disappointing because the symphony did 3 pretty bland/orchestral songs that did not exactly match the occasion. With that, the sound system really did not do the symphony justice. It was a pretty disappointing 20-30 minutes or so. I've heard at the other shows on her tours she does some old material and then transforms into her alter ego.

When she finally did come out, it was surreal. It was a mixture of social justice/performance art/amazing music. It was humorous and witty, yet all the little spoken words and other quirks didn't take away from the amazing music. She's really taken the creativity up a notch. I'd say her stuff draws inspiration from a mixture of Janelle Monae, Kimbra, and Nai Palm from Hiatus kaiyote while retaining her amazing vocals and style in general. It was great watching her jam at the waterfront. My parents are now huge fans and it was a bomb way to spend the last few days at home before heading back to college.

  • One of the better musical experiences I've ever had. She is unreal talented, unreal engaging, unreal beautiful. Just the ideal musical experience- the audience never felt like they were being subjected to a "standard" Esperanza Spalding experience, but rather being treated to the bare expression of the artist's purest self. I should note that we benefited from a wonderful context for this show: it was at Berklee, where she studied/taught and has a rich community. The audience was a hometown crowd, humming along to her complicated vocal runs and improvisations. She also called on some friends to put together a "this-show-only" back up jazz ensemble that allowed her to perform some of her bigger hits. I brought a couple people who had no idea who she was, and left wanting to follow her on tour. I only have one data point, but if you get the chance to see her, do it. A uniquely genius musical soul is a sight to be seen.

  • Esperanza Spalding is a revelation to the jazz scene. She is the first female artist I've seen that plays bass and sings. Her lyrics were tantalizing and soulful. Esperanza's stage presence along with her two piece ensemble tells you that this is an experience you won't forget. Her original songs captured thoughts of love and wanting to be loved. Her melodic tones and lyrics painted great pictures of sassiness, "cat and mouse" chasing, and lyrical reflections. Her brief stories of the next song or piece was filled with humor, deep thought and reflection. I saw Esperanza at The Colony Theatre on Miami Beach. I definitely want to see her again in an open air forum. I desire to feel the cool breeze across my face, reclined back amongst other jazz enthusiasts while experiencing Esperanza and her innovative jazz sound filled with soul, seduction and "want". Ahhhh, a moment of utopia!

  • One of the worse concerts I have tried to attend to. And I mean tried to since the sound was so so so bad that I had to leave the room. Unfortunately for Esperanza I was not the only one, a lot of people left the room complaining about the quality and the volume of the sound. The acoustic drum set was reverberating all over the auditorium, and to compensate that the sound engineers decided to increase the volume of the other instruments, making it unbearable to stay inside. We could not distinguish any note that Esperanza played in her bass. On top of that, the concept of the concert was not well thought of, please try to stay as an amazing Jazz player that you are and do not attempt to make musicals, as this concert seems to pretend to be. Horrible decisions by an amazing player.

  • Emily d-evolution has been a very impressive and original experience from the music to the performance. You can still feel the presence of Esperanza in some of the new songs but it is also very interesting the type of fusion that is found in this new album.

It is great that I could have been part of this concert with amazing and virtuoso musician such as Esperanza and her band. They are able to play with all types of music styles building, shaping and merging harmonies really different from the common scene.

I totally recommend Esperanza Spalding, she is an artist that is alive trying to spread her wishes for music experimentation and evolution.

  • Beautifully Melodic! Esperanza Spaulding with her new group "Royal T" were simply amazing! She sang the story of a shy man in a club who takes a chance to speak with a woman he is interested in, can't wait to hear more from this project.

  • Esperanza was, as always, brilliant. Amazing, lovely, energetic, thrilling. "Black Gold" almost took me to tears with emotion and thankfulness. I hope we can often count on her brightness and musical intelligence in Brazilian lands.

  • The show was fantastic! Esperanza came, we saw, and she captivated us all as anticipated.

II cannot get enough of this heavenly being whose sole purpose, I believe, is to create beautiful melodies that inspire us to be-free.

  • Her new project is ambitious and brilliant. The social theme that she chose for lyrics of this album is moving and works greatly with the music. I am waiting for her album release to listen again and again.
