Love this movie

I watched this for the first time when I was young in my grandparents basement. As a kid I love it, but now that I'm older I can appreciate what John Carpenter did. He essentially improved every aspect of escape from NY, with this movie. More action, and slightly more interesting plot. They are both similar movies with similar plots, but escape from LA brings more action, with a better soundtrack. Tool and white zombie along with Randy Newman. Gotta love that. This movie holds a special place for me bc it was one of those impactful movies when I was young that ignited my imagination. So I'm happy to finally own it, I could never find it on streaming when I wanted to watch it. Highly recommend this movie if you want a good 90s B movie with some cheesy CGI. This is for you. Kurt Russell at his best, not to mention Snake pliskin is the character inspiration for solid snake in the metal gear games! Which almost got Konami in some trouble when the Creator admitted that publicly. But that's another story..

Thoughts from someone not blinded by nostalgic bias

Just the past couple of months, I've seen both Escape from New York and Escape from L.A. for the very first time. I happened across a clip from the L.A. movie online and was immediately intrigued. I saw people in the comments giving praise to both, but mostly to the first movie. I didn't bother trying to see anything else from either movie if I could help it, so I went ahead and bought both of the movies for the hell of it.

Watching the first movie left me disappointed. I don't understand its cult following. Not much really happens. It isn't a complex plot by any means, there aren't much to the short-lived action sequences.

Escape from L.A. is a copy-cat plot (and this is probably a foundational reason as to why the fans of the first movie tend not to like this one). Similar situation, same motivation to get in and get out, same character archetypes throughout. The difference is that they actually made this one fun, entertaining, and interesting. The action is a lot more prevalent and there were more jokes. The use of CGI is kind of terrible, but it's a bad movie to begin with not taking itself too seriously. Did it "jump the shark?" Sure, but I didn't think of the first movie as realistic to begin with, so I wasn't expecting it with this one.

Both movies suffer from a severe lack of character development. Why should I care if somebody dies if they only had a few minutes of screen time? John Carpenter likely treated these scripts as a simple parody commentary on where he saw the United States heading politically. A devolution into anarchy as the growing police state came up with tactics to contain said anarchy as well as maintain its stranglehold on the country at large. I don't really consider him a great director/writer to begin with. His masterpiece is The Thing, but that was a remake and adaptation, so not an original idea.

La considero de serie B, no recordaba los malos efectos especiales, parecen de Playstation 1, la historia es similar a la.de escape.de new York, pero aca es en los angeles, el nivel de producción si es modesto, pero el personaje Snake vale la.compra de la pelicula, de ahi salio Metal Gear. Subtítulos en español. Tal vez no valga la pena el 4k porque así se evidencia más los pobres efectos especiales.

Insultingly underrated sequel

I love both Escape from New York and Escape from LA. But the latter I like a little before because it’s insulting underrated. Sure, it’s basically Escape from New York, but it’s also a parody and homage to the action film genre. I mean, have you seen recent modern action movies lately? This movie still holds up to this day and if you can’t accept it for what it is, I don’t know what to tell you.

The bonus features are great although I would’ve loved to see an audio commentary with John Carpenter and Kurt Russell talking about their experiences with this film, and a vintage making-of featurette which I believe is on YouTube. Seriously, Scream Factory. Why is that not on this release?

If you love this film or are wanting to complete your John Carpenter collection, Escape from LA is a worthy addition.

On a side note, it’s a dirty shame that the newly released 4K UHD release of the film has no bonus features whereas this does. Fingers crossed Scream Factory re-releases this one on 4K like they are with the upcoming 4K release of Escape from the New York, maybe with some newer bonus features.

Die Flucht aus L.A. ist quasi eine 1-1 Neuauflage von der Flucht aus N.Y. Nur dass Snake dieses Mal Plissken heißt oder umgekehrt.

Wie der Vorgänger hat der Film auch ein begrenztes Budget gehabt, an mancher Stelle wies dies aber schön umgesetzt. Ich muss drüber schmunzeln. Etwa bei dem Wellenritt. Der Cartoon artig gezeichnete Hintergrund, aus der Autoperkspektive. Köstlich.

Bester B-Movie.
Leider ist die blu-ray Variante mir zu teuer aber für 4,99€ als dvd. Da muss er in die Sammlung.
Qualität ist für so einen Film absolut ausreichend.
