Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees, in partnership with the Head of School, safeguards and strengthens Brentwood School’s financial stability, vision, and core values to ensure excellence for today’s students and generations to come.

2023-24 Board of Trustees

What is the role of the Board of Trustees?

The Board of Trustees protects Brentwood School’s long-term viability and ensures that it will continue to thrive through generative strategic planning, responsible fiscal management, support of the School’s equity and inclusion initiatives, and collaborative partnership with the Head of School.

Which decisions are made by the Board of Trustees?

The Board of Trustees approves the school’s annual budget, including tuition levels; sets, reviews, and revises long-range plans; approves and supports fundraising initiatives for capital improvements and endowment growth; and hires and supports the Head of School. The Board of Trustees is not involved with the daily running of the School—trustees do not influence hiring or admissions decisions or set curriculum.

How does the Board of Trustees work with school administrators?

The Head of School reports to the Board of Trustees as a whole, but not to individual trustees. The board is responsible for hiring, setting compensation for, and evaluating the Head of School. The board has no oversight over other administrators or employees and is not involved in the day-to-day management of the School. At times, administrators besides the Head of School will work in an advisory capacity with the Board of Trustees, sharing critical financial, fundraising, or governance information with specific board committees.

Organized as a not-for-profit corporation under the laws of the State of California and granted 501(c)3 status by the IRS, Brentwood School is accredited by the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), as well as a member of CAIS, NAIS, and INDEX.

Brentwood School is governed by a Board of Trustees, consisting of parent, alumni, parent of alumni, and community volunteers, who provide strategic oversight to ensure that Brentwood School fulfills its educational mission. The board meets approximately six times throughout the school year. Through board committees—among them Finance, Governance, DEI, Institutional Goals, Advancement, and Audit—the board has frequent and regular campus contact with parents, alumni, and school administrators.
