FITZGERALD,ELLA / PETERSON,OSCAR - Ella Sings & Oscar Swings: Harold Arlen Songbook - Amazon.com Music
In 1953 record label owner Norman Granz had pianist Oscar Peterson launch the first in a series of 120 tracks on ten albums featuring tunes penned by America s finest songwriters, one of which, Oscar Peterson Plays Harold Arlen is remembered here. Three years later, Granz developed his idea further. Having signed Ella Fitzgerald to his Verve label, he decided to engage her in a similar project but, this time, one that would involve a series of elite backings provided by some of the best orchestras and most talented arrangers on the scene. Enjoy these three original albums including Stormy Weather, One for My Baby (And One More For The Road), and many more.

Beware, just a bit: this is not duet work, as suggested by the cover photo. Discs 1 and 2 are "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Harold Arlen Song Book," available on Verve, whereas Disc 3 is Oscar Peterson playing nice arrangements, but it's completely instrumental. Ella's not to be seen on Disc 3. On this set, you'll miss 4 Ella tracks that are on the Verve label's Disc 2, tracks 13-16. All in all, it wasn't a bad way to get 15 tracks of Oscar Peterson. :)
I thought this was a collaboration by Ella and Oscar, but unfortunately it is a combination of two albums that they made separately. Two albums that I already had. I was gypped. That said, the quality of their performances is wonderful - of course! I gave it away.
Like others I was expecting Ella with Oscar but Ella is not on the Peterson disc and it was a bit underwhelming for my tastes. The Verve original of this as a double album is ferociously expensive at the moment for reasons I do not understand because the others (except the Kern one which is unobtainable on Amazon and very expensive elsewhere) are cheap and plentiful second hand.. I bought part two of the Verve issue before getting this album and was shocked at the great stereo quality. However, this version has a mix where parts of the orchestra are out of balance and a number of solos so quiet as to be close to non-existent, although for the most part the recording is fine. I do not think it is a problem with my equipment but I cannot believe these recordings were released on vinyl like this. I am assuming the Verve issue(s) have been reprocessed. If you are not as fussy as me, these are cheap enough to satisfy most but I have just ordered the second part of the Verve issue. I never used to like any of this tampering with original recordings but I now think it is justified in some cases.
