Eleanor of Woodstock

Eleanor of Woodstock (18 June 1318 – 22 April 1355) was the wife of Reginald II of Guelders.

Biography[]

Eleanor was born on 18 June 1318 in Woodstock Palace, Oxfordshire to King Edward II of England and Isabella of France, and she was intended to marry Alfonso XI of Castile in 1325, although the dowry prevented such a marriage. In 1332, she married Count Reginald II of Guelders, but she was over-eager to please her husband due to her own unhappy childhood. Her husband pretended that she had leprosy and sent her away, so she turned up in court at Nijmegen and stripped down, showing that she was no leper. Her husband was forced to live with her until his death in 1343, and she would fail to be regent, resigning in 1344. She died in a convent at the age of 36 in 1355.
