Marian Eileen Charpentier (1936 – 2022)

Marian (Townsend) Charpentier of Warrenton, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2022. She was 86.

She was born in Pepperell, Massachusetts, on April 19, 1936, the daughter of the late Mary Evelyn and William Seymour Sr. Townsend, MA. Marian and her siblings grew up on the family farm in Pepperell. Marian, at 19 years old, married the late Martin Francis Charpentier, known affectionately as “Charp,” and they were married for over 50 years. Her greatest joys were the social gatherings and extensive travel she shared with her husband, family, and friends.

Marian, her husband, and her children lived on Cottage Street in Vienna, VA, and later moved to a small horse farm in Nokesville, VA. She was a bookkeeper for several businesses and owned Passages Travel in Front Royal for over a decade. She and her husband retired and moved to Monroe, Georgia. After her husband’s passing, she returned to Virginia to live out her life surrounded by family.

Marian is survived by the last of her five siblings, Kathy Rossbach (Charlie) of Townsend, MA; daughters Maria Dutton (Paul Barnhart Jr) of Front Royal, VA, and Michele Noel of Warrenton, VA; son Charles Charpentier (Susan) of Winchester, VA; grandchildren; Justin Dutton (Amanda) of Front Royal, VA; Sophia Deel and Vivienne Noel of Warrenton, VA; Charles Charpentier (Jenna) of Sterling, VA; Candi Watkins (Douglas) of Maryland; Tammy Pruett (Dave) of Pawleys Island, SC along with several great-grandchildren.

She will finally be reunited in heaven with her everlasting love, her husband.

A Memorial Service will be held at Moser Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, July 25, 2022, at 4:00 pm. A reception will follow at The Moser House from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Ernestine S. Woodbridge, 88, of Strasburg, Virginia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at Winchester Medical Center.

A Home Going service will be held on Saturday, March 23, at 12:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home with Pastor Raymond H. Morton, Jr. of Mount Olive Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be on Tuesday, March 26, at 2:00 p.m. in Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, Virginia.

Mrs. Woodbridge was born August 22, 1935, in Benham, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Turner and Myrtle Welch Sykes.

Mrs. Woodbridge was a tremendous cook and blessed everyone with her cooking, including those at the daycare where she worked. She was a Star of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church member in Triangle and under the watch care of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Middletown.

She was married to the late Eugene Curtis Woodbridge, Sr., U.S. Army retired.

Surviving are four sons, Eugene Curtis Woodbridge, Jr. of Carlisle, Pennsylvania; James Alphonso Woodbridge, U.S. Army retired, of Woodbridge, Lee Andre Woodbridge, Sr. of McDowell, Georgia, and David Turner Woodbridge of Front Royal; two daughters, Patricia Ann Woodbridge of Strasburg, and Tina Atkinson of Toms Brook; one sister, Catherine Sykes Webster of Dale City; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mrs. Woodbridge was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five sisters, two brothers, and one grandchild, Tracey Atkinson.

Pallbearers will be Alton Woodbridge, Allen Woodbridge, Jonathon Woodbridge, Sean Woodbridge, Devin Woodbridge, Lee Woodbridge, Jr., Derek Kendall, and Tobin Richerson.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, March 23, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m..

Shirley Ann “Bootsie” Cubbage (1939 – 2024)

Shirley Ann “Bootsie” Cubbage, 84, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2024, at Shenandoah Senior Living.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, March 25, 2024, at 1 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 West Main Street, Front Royal, with Sammy Campbell officiating.  Burial will follow at Panorama Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Cubbage was born to the late Osborne and Anna Mae McDonald Campbell on March 23, 1939, in Luray, Virginia.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Morris J. Cubbage; three brothers, Julian Campbell, Lolia Campbell, and Phillip Campbell; and two sisters, Anna Belle Good and Charlotte Johnson.

She was a seamstress with Aileen Sewing Factory, then later with housekeeping at Warren Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include her son, Anthony “Tony” Cubbage of Rileyville, Virginia; two daughters, Stephanie Kay Ray of Hilliard, Ohio and Jacqueline “Jackie” Carper of Front Royal; daughter of her heart, Lorrie Megeath of Front Royal; eight grandchildren, Christopher Cubbage, Nick Cubbage, Cody Cubbage, Jared Cubbage, Andrew Ray, Nathan Ray, Amber Cook and Katie Kawasaki; 15 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Betty Lou Housden of Stanley.

Pallbearers will be Chris Cubbage, Nick Cubbage, Cody Cubbage, Andrew Ray, Christian Cubbage and Nathan Ray.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jeremy Cook, Mike Good, and Junior Talbot.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, March 24, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m..

Patricia Lee Saffell Derflinger (1938 – 2024)

Patricia Lee Saffell Derflinger, age 86, peacefully passed on March 10, 2024, at her home in Front Royal, VA, from complications of congestive heart failure.

Born February 16, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Walter Lee Saffell and Elizabeth Martin Saffell Weaver Hoffman.  Her father was Paul R. Weaver, whom she held in high respect throughout her life.

She was married to the late Allen William Derflinger for 62 years before his passing on January 4, 2020.

Her children survive Mrs. Derflinger, Allen William Derflinger II of Centreville, VA, Rev. Michael Derflinger and wife Sherri of Christiansburg, VA, Joel Clarke Derflinger and wife Jennifer of Bristow, VA, and Julia Ellen Derflinger Conrad and husband Mike of Spotsylvania, VA. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, James M. Derflinger II, Jeremy B. Derflinger (Stevie), Andrea B. Derflinger, Rachel E. Lugo (Mario), Heather M. Derflinger, Julia S. Derflinger, William O. Conrad, and Lydia V. Conrad. Other survivors include four nieces, five nephews, and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Derflinger was pre-deceased by her sister, Paula W. Erdman.

Pat was a graduate of Warren County High School, Class of 1956. She was a homemaker during the time her kids were in grade school. Still, through the power of prayer and family encouragement, she returned to school. She graduated in May 1977 with an Associate of Science in Nursing at Shenandoah College. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Warren Memorial Hospital for over 20 years.

Pat and Allen began attending Riverton United Methodist Church in 1957 and gladly served as active members for over 60 years. Pat served in multiple ways and had a special interest in the children’s ministry, Christian education, and fundraising.

Pat set a great example as a wife, mother, and grandmother. Lovingly known as “Nana,” she made their home the central gathering place for the family to meet each year for the holidays. It was also at their timeshares in Daytona Beach that various members of the family would get together each summer for more than 35 years. In addition to annual trips to Daytona Beach, Allen and Pat were able to enjoy a number of other trips, vacations, and several cruises.

The family wishes to send our heartfelt thanks to all of the caregivers who have provided comfort to Mom over the past year. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests that remembrances can be made to Riverton Church. (55 E. Strasburg Rd., Front Royal, VA 22630.)

The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 17, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Riverton Church. A funeral service will be held Monday, March 18 at 1 p.m. at Riverton Church by the Rev. Marc Roberson and the Rev. Michael Derflinger. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Dorothy Marie Powell (1939 – 2024)

Dorothy Marie Powell (formerly Stoots, daughter to Elsie and Edger Stoots, originally from Pulaski, Virginia) passed away peacefully on February 21, 2024, with family present.

Dorothy was born to Elsie and Edger Stoots in Pulaski, Virginia, on September 17, 1939. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Edward Neal Powell, Sr. She is survived by her daughter Debora Gordon, and her three sons, Gregory, Neal, and Michael; her five grandchildren: Mallory, Kristen, Brice, Stephanie, and Brent; and her 11 great-grandchildren that she adored.

Dorothy was the child of parents who lived through the great depression. She was one of six children who made the trip from Pulaski, Virginia, with their parents, who wanted a better life for their family.

Dorothy met her future husband, Eddie, when she was only five.  They both lived on Rivermont Drive in Warren County.  Eddie said he knew early on that she would be the woman he would one day marry, and they did so when they were only 18.

Dorothy worked at the Avtex Fiber Plant in Front Royal from 1961 to 1971 and then went on to co-own and help run several local businesses with her husband. She and Eddie enjoyed traveling and going on cruises, and she would accompany her husband to as many of the grandchildren’s events as possible. Dorothy and Eddie treasured those times.

Dorothy was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.  She will be sorely missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Helen Frances Thompson, 85, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the Lynn Care Center in Front Royal.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 22, at 1:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, with Sammy Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Panorama Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Thompson was born March 14, 1938, in Ida, Virginia, the daughter of the late Cletus Ohio and Emma Roberta Kendall Deavers.

She worked as a nursing assistant for Warren Memorial Hospital and the Lynn Care Center for many years.

She was married to the late Charles Edward Thompson.

Surviving are her children, Charles Wayne Thompson (Jackie) of Strasburg, Wanda Nelson (Conrad), Elizabeth Jones (Duane) of Conway, South Carolina, and Carl Thompson of Wardensville, West Virginia; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Robert Deavers, and two sisters, Dean Housden and Doris Smeltzer.

Rodney William Whitney, Sr, 72, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away at his home on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, March 21, at 1 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11-1 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday, March 21.

Mr. Whitney was born May 26, 1951, in Gouverneur, New York, the son of the late William Richard and Helen Joyce Hardy Whitney.

Mr. Whitney enlisted in the U.S. Army at 17, where he would spend time in Vietnam before being honorably discharged. After his discharge from the military, Mr. Whitney was the owner and operator of several service stations in and around Northern Virginia, including Circle Sunoco, Chantilly Shell, and Herndon Texaco. Being a mechanic wasn’t just a career; it was his entire life.

Surviving are three sons, Collin Andrew Whitney of Alexandria, Brian Joseph Whitney of Washington State, and Erik Buckingham; three daughters, Pamela Irene Turnmeyer of Linden, Melissa Joy Gordon of Front Royal, and Kristine Michelle Dawson of Front Royal; four brothers, Kelly Whitney of Lovettsville, Rick Whitney of Pennsylvania, Kendall Whitney of Sterling, and Kriss Whitney of Harrisville, New York; five sisters, Lynette Whitney of Lovettsville, Janette Whitney of Luray, Anne Whitney Gonzales of Kentucky, Tammy McCue of South Carolina, and Suann Kling of Natural Bridge, New York; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Rodney William “Willie” Whitney, Jr., and several brothers and sisters.
