- Kep70Brigg, United Kingdom461 contributionsConstable countyLovely to visit this National Trust venue and to see where John Constable set his stunning Haywain painting. A very well maintained place with something for everyone and plenty of lovely walks around the place. You can take a boat ride which is payable separately to entrance fee as run by someone else, you take take a look in the museum, gift shop or relax by the river with a cup of tea or coffee from the cafe. The RSPB area is nice if you enjoy wildlife and plenty of staff to inform you of their work. All in all a great afternoon spent here in peaceful surroundings,Visited June 2023Written 13 July 2023
- jamiesandilands9Ipswich, United Kingdom149 contributionsRelaxing walk in fresh airWe visited on a warm summer day and strangely but fortunately it was quiet. Unless you are a member of the National Trust it will cost you £5 to park your car – A bargain if you ask me. Not only can you have a nice walk around the picturesque area around the Mill you can also have a nice stroll with the Cows all the way down to Dedham. If you don’t want to walk far you can hire 2 / 4 a boat and head down the river or bring your own canoe along. Whatever you decide you will have fun. Make sure you look at the local wildlife, birds, bees and more in the area close to the car park. Volunteers are on hand to answer and queries you may have. You will also find a nice coffee shop, serving drinks and food, with a large outdoor seating area. It was nice to see so many people enjoying themselves and families having picnics. The is also a visitors’ centre, a small shop.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 July 2023
- jetsaverSouthport, United Kingdom639 contributionsA trip down memory laneWas returning to this place with my son who went there when he was 4 yrs old and now is 50. it hadn't changed much and it was nice to walk along the river. There are boat trips you can go on which are good, but you have to book. A nice little cafe/shop also. We went in August when wherever we went there seemed to be wasps, but it did not spoil our trip down memory lane.Visited August 2023Written 21 August 2023

It’s like stepping back in time, very quaint place, a couple of marked walks which we did with our dog. We spent an enjoyable morning there, and had lunch in the very large garden area, which was lovely apart from all the wasps!!Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 August 2023

Then relax in the cafeDrive further into the Suffolk countryside along narrow country lanes and you will arrive at this beautiful National Trust mill and grounds. The hikes can take you around a wheelchair friendly trail as well as up hills and along the river banks. The original buildings are preserved and the interior represents 19th century country life. Then sit in the cafe or along the riverbank and enjoy a coffee and snack. Picnic tables are also available. I had soup and gluten free bread. It’s a really picarea and the paths along the river are good for walking with a dog. There is a cafe/tearoom on site and an exhibition on Constable. Having been a lifelong admirer of Constable's paintings I was really looking forward to this visit. I thought it would be trip to one of the quintessential corners of disappearing old England .....and in one sense it was.
But, for me, the whole experience was spoil for several reasons. First, and foremost, of all the buildings at the site, the only one we could enter was the cafe, which sells typically over-priced and measly portioned National Trust snacks.
The Farm-house and the old Mill building were commandeered as places of educational purpose for overseas students. Two cottages next to the cafe were also closed for some obscure reason.
We are National Trust members but if we had paid for entry I would definitely have been demanding a refund.
It was a long journey down to Suffolk for this disappointing experience and certainly one we won't be making again.

A beautiful spot for a visit. Some short walks around the NT estate or just sit by the River Stour & soak up the ambience. Very picturesque - literally!

My family (2 adults and 2 young children) and my friend and his daughter had a lovely time paddle boarding/kayaking along the river. It was incredibly picturesque and, despite it being busy, it didn’t feel overcrowded on the water. It was an absolute pleasure. However, the day was somewhat ruined by the tearoom….
After waiting in a 15 minute queue (I understand this can’t be helped during the summer holidays, however the staff did seem to be rather slow…) we headed to the garden. However, as soon as we put our tray down we were swarmed with wasps. My slice of Victoria sponge was literally covered in wasps! The young children were, not surprisingly, terrified so we headed back inside the cafe in the hope of escaping the onslaught of wasps. Unfortunately, the wasps followed us inside! They were all over our cakes and ice creams. It was unbearable! We had to down our coffees in minutes and stuff our cakes in our bag to escape before we were all stung. A total waste of £25!
I obviously understand that wasps are part of the British summertime. But I really do feel the tearoom should have a sign warning people against buying sweet food (particularly anything with jam in it!) during the summer months unless they are happy to deal with masses of wasps. I am really cross about the money we have wasted for our two minute sit down! I’ve honestly never seen wasps like it in my life!

Unfortunately we don't have dogs any more but I do remember lots of people walking dogs. There is an outside eating area but I don't think they were waiting on tables. You had to queue up, for dog years

Hi - a group of about 10 people are coming along to visit on Monday 21 March. 2 questions please:
- is there a guided tour we could book and if so, how much per person is it?
- will the restaurant be open for lunch, as I notice it doesn't open on a Monday earlier in the year?
Thanks
