james burton is god......not eric clapton. james' clear telecaster sound has survived the years, and only gotten better. from "suzy q" to sessions with buffalo springfield, and merle haggard, james laid 'em down- clean and simple. not to say all of james' solos were easy to play, on this cd we hear some solos that definitely demanded some serious dexterity.
one of the best things about james' solos, is that he always played to the song, the song did not play to him- the true sign of a master.
listen to these tracks and dig 'em, then flush out your collection with james' work with gram parsons, emmylou harris, and elvis presley. you wanna hear modern music in the making? look to james burton, and you won't need to look any further.

As a raving fan of James Burton's guitar playing, I hoped that I would hear some of the background and lead playing that supported various artists for Mr. Burton's long and meritorious career. I should have realized that those artists would have to be included in the recordings...financially at least. Since that was not the case, most of what is on this CD is relatively unimportant (at least in my viewpoint) as a demonstration of his abilities and great talent.

Le son et le succès des rockers des années 60 devait pour beaucoup aux guitaristes solos qui les soutenaient au sein du groupe (Scotty Moore pour Elvis par exemple) A ce titre il est clair que Ricky Nelson doit beaucoup à James Burton. Ce qui est moins connu, est que ce guitariste génial, très jeune à l'époque, a enregistré avec une pléiade d'artistes d'horizon très variés. Pour ce qui concerne la période 56/69, beaucoup sont regroupés ici dans des enregistrements assez rares et superbement remasterisés qui mettent en valeur la richesse, le son, la fluidité des solos du guitariste. Le jeune virtuose fidèle à sa Telecaster Standart a par exemple enregistré avec Dale Hawkings, Bob Luman, Ricky Nelson pour le Rock mais aussi et avec le même bonheur Jimmy Dobro, Buddy Cagle, Jim & Joe, Merle Haggard pour la Country, Lee Hazlewood, The Everly Brothers, Buffalo Springfield pour la Pop (listes non exhaustives) Il y amême des raretés où James joue de la country en solo ou utilise des instruments improbables pour lui (guitare acoustique ou dobro) Tout comme la plupart des CD produits par le label anglais ACE de la série "The golden age of american rock'n'roll", celui ci est remarquable tant par le bonheur induit par la sélection des titres que par la qualité de la remasterisation. Vingt huit titres pour 63'30 de plaisir qui au minimum généreront un brin de nostalgie chez l'auditeur, au mieux lui feront entendre que ces différents styles musicaux n'étaient pas si éloignés à l'époque. Aprés 1969, James Burton enregistrera avec d'autres sommités (Emmilou Harris, Elvis Presley, John Denver entre autres) Cette période sera couverte par un second CD à venir. Cerise sur le gateau : le CD est accompagné d'un livret superbement illustré (16 pages) retraçant la carrière de James Burton pendant la période concernée.

Mention the name James Burton to Rock and Roll/ Country fans and the majority would probably say ,"Oh yes, wasn't he the guy who played guitar on Ricky Nelsons' records" or "He was the guitarist in Presley's house band" The answers would be correct, but Burton was and still is, much more than that. Never a major star in his own right, this compilation of Burtons earlier session work shows the regard for his talent held by major artists of that time through having him on their recordings.
Artists such as, Dale Hawkins, Rick Nelson, Lee Greenwood, Bob Luman, The Everly Bros, are all featured on this compilation, along with rare cuts from Burton himself, or in association with other musicians such as Ralph Mooney, pedal steel player in Merle Haggards band The Strangers, and the Shindogs, the resident band on the US TV rock show Shindig. Not on the album is probably Burtons most well known guitar solo, the lead break in Nelsons' Hello Mary Lou, and some will no doubt query this omission, but Nelson fans will have this track anyway, and this album is after all a dedication to Burtons diverse work over the years.
As with all Ace releases, the accompanying booklet is superb. The liner notes are informative and objective, and great credit must go to the compilers and writers of this package, as it also must to Ace Records for adding an artist of Burtons stature to their catalogue. Volume two will be eagerly awaited by owners of this package, and like the man himself will be a hard act to follow.
