No. 12 Oklahoma State Tops Tech in Series Finale

April 11, 2021 | Softball

The Cowgirls swept the series over the Red Raiders with a 10-3 win on Sunday afternoon.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech (16-19, 0-9 Big 12) was swept for the third consecutive Big 12 series as No. 12 Oklahoma State (32-5, 8-1 Big 12) took the series finale 10-3 on Sunday.

Despite the loss, the Red Raiders put up the second most runs on Cowgirl's starter Carrie Eberle this season, who entered the contest with the seventh best ERA in the nation.

Oklahoma State wasted no time getting on the board as Kiley Naomi went deep for a leadoff home run in the top of the first. The Cowgirls looked to pile it on in the opening frame with back-to-back singles to follow the home run, but a double play and a ground out would limit the damage to just one run.

The Red Raiders responded in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead off the first home run of the season for Breanna Russell. Russell's home run came after a two-out single from Kelcy Leach. Leach then advanced to second on a wild pitch before being driven home on Russell's line drive shot over the left center wall.

Tech's lead would not last long, as Oklahoma State answered with back-to-back doubles to open the third to tie the game at two. With a runner on second, Haley Busby sent a laser shot over the left field wall to give OSU the 4-2 lead. Three straight walks loaded the bases for Oklahoma State with one out and a wild pitch allowed one more run to cross before a groundout ended the top half of the inning.

The Red Raiders were able to get one run back in the bottom of the third when an error allowed Karli Hamilton to reach base safely and advanced Heaven Burton to third. Peyton Blythe sent a ball into deep left for a sac fly that scored Burton to pull back within two at 5-3.

Oklahoma State added to their lead in the fourth when Busby sent her second home run of the game over the left field wall for a 7-3 lead. Tech made a call to the bullpen bringing in Erin Edmoundson to replace Missy Zoch. Edmoundson was able to retire the next two batters and get the Red Raiders out of the inning.

Tech put a runner in scoring position in the bottom half of the inning, but a double play would end the Red Raider threat.

The Cowgirls increased the lead to five when Sydney Pennington sent the first pitch of the fifth inning over the fence for a solo home run, 8-3. They added some insurance in the seventh off a two-RBI single from pinch hitter Jordan Doggett.

Down by seven going into the final frame, the Red Raiders started the inning with back-to-back singles from Kelcy Leach and Breanna Russell. Jacee Hamlin and Payton Jackson, pinch running for Leach and Russell, advanced to second and third on a groundout to put two Red Raiders in scoring position with two outs. The Red Raiders were unable to push the runners across, resulting in a 10-3 loss in the series finale.

Zoch (7-9) was attributed with the loss in the circle after starting the first 3.1 innings and giving up seven runs on seven hits while walking six. Edmoundson entered in relief and pitched the final 3.2 innings allowing three runs on three hits with five strikeouts.

Eberle (14-1) tallied her second win of the series giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits while walking three and striking out four. The senior gave up at least three runs and surrendered a home run for just the fourth time this season.

Leach and Russell combined for all of the Red Raider's hits with Leach going 2-for-2 at the plate and reaching base three times while Russell went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Busby led the Cowgirls offensively, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs and four RBI.
