I went home and immediately ordered Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as I think Michele Yeoh is a great actress, especially now older, wiser, mature, and fascinating to watch her depth of feeling and expressions in the roles she takes on in her midlife career (she was exceptional and brilliant in Everything Everywhere All at Once). Also I've been a great fan of Tony Leung and Akwafina (I did not know Sir Ben Kingsley had a role in the film - brilliant as always). I knew the film won some awards a couple years back. But... Wow! I was not prepared for this. The movie totally blew me away.
I don't want to give any spoilers. It is a film to watch and be drawn into, let it flow with no preconceptions. It begins in Mandarin centuries earlier in China, but a short time into the film it switches to English in modern San Francisco, Some of the best action sequences I've seen in recent films. The CGI works seamlessly into the film and is about the best I have seen and I give praise to the team that worked on it, praise also to the film editors, the cinematographers, and to the director and his vision. The writers also must be given credit for making an essentially fantasy action film come alive in a way that you can imagine being young again and encountering your first film about good and evil, and the importance of good character, virtues and life values of family, friendship, love, loyalty in the confrontation with evil. It is visually stunning if not astonishing. The acting is superb by all, obviously the product of team work. It ends with a suggestion of more to come, and I for one cannot wait to see the next chapter. But first I am going to watch Shang Chi and the Legend of the Twelve Rings again and again. It is a total film experience, and for this I give it 5 Stars, two thumbs up.
Retcon.
You see, I grew up with Powerman and Iron Fist and had my run-ins with Shang-Chi ... you know, the son of Fu Manchu.
This isn't him. This isn't my Shang-Chi.
This is some other guy.
It was a good movie in it's own right, but it isn't my Shang-chi ... I think I've made that clear enough now.
Both Marvel and DC have seen retcons over the years.
Really there was a retcon between the Golden Age and Silver Age of comics.
I don't know. Retcons every 25-50 years is one thing. Retcon-ing every couple of years ... it's getting out of hand. Entire universes getting torn apart. Now they are killing of 50% of the universe in one movie ... and recon-ing reality in the next.
This is only part of that. A Retcon.
Just because it is a different world doesn't mean it is a bad one. I mean I really have no idea what has been going on in Marvel comics for the most part in over 20 years. I have no idea what Shang-chi is like now ... in print.
This was a ride from ho-hum life to crazy fantasy trip.
Heroes journey? Not much of path down into darkness ... some ... but not to much really unless you count the flash backs.
Same goes for "is it a kung fu movie" .... I guess if you have read any of my martial arts/wuxia movie reviews you probably knew that was coming. Yes. This is a kung fu movie ... the main character does have training sequence to show them learning their skills ... more than one in fact. Training sequences for more than one main/support characters. And training sequences in general. However, at the same time, there is no actual enduring practice of any special art/technique. Very superficial when it comes to training. A rock skipping on the surface. There is no deep dive into the power within Shang-chi ... there is instead a lot of really good CGI.
It gets very GI Joe in some places, but COBRA agents aren't able to jump out of submarines that have been blown out of the water wearing parachutes so they can drift down safely to the water or nearby islands.
Spoiler alert!
If you are going to kill off 50% of the universe, people are dying in the process.
These deaths don't have the impact of the original animated Transformers movie starring Orson Welles, Leonard Nimoy, and Eric Idle.
I can't really say any more without any real spoilers.
Best way to end this is to say that if you were a fan of the original Shang-Chi from 1970's this movie is going to take you places with the character that you would never figure it was going to go ... and pretty much in an entirely different world .... oh, did I mention that "He's not my Shang-Chi"?
It is fake, unauthentic, bad, but non-Asians seem to like it so it is popular.
The movie seems to have went through different plot twists except it forgot to tell the audience. I swear I felt I saw at least 3 plots with multiple conclusions in one single movie.
Is the father supposed to be the evil antagonist? Yes.
Is the father supposed to be a victim who deserves sympathy? Yes.
Is the father supposed to love his son and daughter? Yes.
Is the father supposed to hate and want to kill his son and daughter? Yes
Why can't the father make up his mind? Ask the fortune cookie.
Also, why is the love-interest asian girl portrayed by, of all names, Awkwafina? She plays a real lovely eye candy damsel in distress that begs the reaction of "why HER???". I mean where are the hot asian women in this movie? Don't Shang Chi like hot asian women? Or is he supposed to be gay? (hey superman is gay so why not Shang Chi?).
That's too bad because this movie does have some great actors and actresses. But the movie is twisted in a convoluted plot with many twists of its own. The kung fu action is just ordinary by modern standards. The special effects is boring. The characters are totally uncompelling. "I killed those who killed my mother" confesses guilty-driven Shang Chi. Oh yeah, that was really upsetting..*yawn*.
We need a better Asian character movie, and unfortunately, Shang Chi just doesn't cut it.
