Another day, another grindhouse send-up.
Dust Up is a successful comedic take on the quiet-loner-helps-family-in-debt-to-an-evil-overlord trope, punctuated with some great cartoonish gore and all-around perversion. Like Father's Day, much of the movie works because of the performances, especially Jeremiah Burkitt as the villain Buzz. He owns this flick and deserves to be a huge star.
Goofy, gross and offensive . . . pretty much perfect for me.
Hahahaaaaa this film is so much fun and so completely over-the-top, I loved every minute of it! It plays it's grindhouse cards with such self-assured confidence, and comes up trumps every time.
The story is ridiculously simple, but it's fleshed-out with some hilarious dialogue, larger-than-life characters, and expert technical wizardry offering some great set-pieces and ultra-violent action. So, if you enjoyed films such as HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN, DRIVE ANGRY, and FATHER'S DAY, you're in for one hell of a ride.
2023 Cult of Personality challenge: Amber Benson film
This was a lot more fun than I was expecting, largely thanks to some deadpan humor and an entertainingly over-the-top big bad.
Personality watch: Benson plays Ella, whose call to Jack for help with her plumbing (not a euphemism, surprisingly enough) sets the big plot in motion.
Cult of Personality 2023:
4. Amber Benson
Perfectly fine and fun Grindhouse comedy. Lots of gross gags and set pieces!
Watched for my Cult of Personality challenge #4: Amber Benson
I read this as a send-up / homage to exploitation westerns / revenge movies. It’s certainly supposed to be over the top and funny. I think by and large it just rubbed me the wrong way. A lot of it is in pretty poor taste (but, why wouldn’t it be? Quentin Tarantino practically vitalized these sorts of films) and I’m not sure it quite has the chops to be ‘bad but in an ironic way.’
Still, there’s some performances where people are giving it their all (mostly Jerimiah Burkitt), and it’s not afraid to go in bonkers directions. Maybe most importantly, I never felt bored.
On the whole: worth a…
ok this was fun as hell and it gets crazy fast! love guys with an eyepatch, love the look jack… really funny moments. totally underrated. love the gore. and cannibalism! once i came across instructions on how to impale someone for roasting so the guy who was impaled and roasted reminded me of that. side note unsure if any indigenous people wrote this and idk if mo’s actor is indigenous but… it kind of felt… stereotypical. but hes cute i like mo i cant fault him too much for being written a certain way. he’s so… pookie. papa’s orchard. anyway super fun! and i love amber benson!
Good B-movie. I felt like I was watching a spin-off from Kill Bill. Though it’s nothing like that movie.
Good acting
Like-able characters
Good editing
Good directing
And excellent cinematography
If you’re looking for a B-movie? But aren’t in the mood for a crap movie, maybe something with some talent and skill behind it’s creation, yet silly enough to tickle your pickle, then stop here and watch this movie.
Worth the watch.
Ella: Woow! That eyepatch is bad-ass.
Jack: Thank you.
Ella: Are you missing an eye.
Jack: I am.
Ella: Wow.
So Dry.
Fantastic low budget exploitation film. It has the same kind of elemant as Bitch Slap out of 2009. But brought less serious.
A ex soldier/plumber, a white indian and a crazy druglord. This put all in a strange mixture of weird images and inappropriate dialogue. In short there is much to enjoy for exploitation fans. Timing is really awesome. And there lies the power of this movie. To make it more unconventional than the rest of the movies in this genre. Although the timing is off-beat in a good way there are some really good lines and moments…
It's not a perfect cult exploitation film for modern times, but DUST UP has more than enough to satisfy those genre fans looking for something new. It has sick humor. It has some cool violence. The characters are all colorful and likeable in their own way. And it's a quick moving film at 90 minutes. If you like campy, violent films that pays homage to the grindhouse era, DUST UP is definitely for you. Hell, maybe it's worth losing an eye over.
Nice independent effort, with one of the better opening credit sequences I have seen in any movie. Keith is in the house!
Nice little no budget grindhouse style flick. Full of violence and absurd dry humor. Also has a lizardman.
