Charles Blackland Francis Kittridge IV proves he don't need no Pixies to play these immortal tunes. Less of a live performance than an exorcism, this is the MTV Unplugged that The Pixies never properly received. A little light on post-Doolittle material (although you still get a searing and majestic "The Happening", and that's easily their best post-Doolittle song) but that's a piddling complaint given the wealth of riches captured on this album. This is an essential document, a raging funeral pyre, and a necessary bridge from Trompe to Frank's self-titled. Francis' voice has never sounded more raw and impassioned than when he's purging these songs from his life once and for all (until the price was right a decade later, at least).
"Steve Albini cut this part out" on "I'm Amazed" is almost worth the price of admission on its own.

Being a huge Pixies fan, I had high hopes and dreams for this thing. And all of them were fulfilled....until the chorus, of just about every song. Now in a live setting, you expect some sort or extent of crowd noise, and to a certain degree it's welcome but damn. During the chorus and occasional verses among other odd noises Frank makes, there is a guy, who seems to be coming from the left speaker, who might as well just jump on stage because he's aiming to be in the spotlight....and frankly it ruins this recording, which would be amazing if not for this moron's horrible singing. I wish there was a way to edit this guy out but until then this is almost unlistenable.

He's still singing the songs like there's his Pixies band behind him...with his shouting & yelping vocals...but the music,...well different ! ACOUSTIC ! Excellent sound quality !
You get to listen to songs like Tame, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Hang Wire, Broken Face, Is She Weird & more, all in all 24 Pixies songs sung unlike anything that you have heard before by the man himself !
Now, the question...is it good ?
