Someone in the Blue Bloods ranks is looking to cop the long-running, well-watched CBS drama at least a few more episodes.
It was announced in November that CBS‘ super-reliable Friday-night closer would be ending after the current season, which is being split into two batches (of 10 and then eight episodes) — the second of which won’t air until the fall.
Back in January, Blue Bloods front man Tom Selleck indicated that he himself is by no means champing at the bit to hang up NYPD police commissioner Frank Reagan’s three-piece suits. “I’m not counting the days so I can do something else,” he told TV Insider. “I love the work. Sometimes the hours are a little harder because I’m older, but so what? I want work as long as they’ll have me.”
Now, TV son Donnie Wahlberg is out there describing Season 14 as “allegedly” and “potentially” the series’ last. “There are rumblings [it isn’t], so we’ll see what happens,” Wahlberg said as a guest on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live (via People.com).
TVLine has reached out to CBS for comment on Wahlberg’s speculation.
It was actually Blue Bloods vet Gregory Jbara, who plays NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Garrett Moore, that first fueled talk of these “final” 18 episodes not necessarily being 100% final.
“I don’t want to get any anyone’s hopes up,” Jbara said on the Think Big podcast (cued up above), “but if our numbers are really good… I know that there’s a push to try and flesh out the back half” of the season, to extend it into Spring 2025 and hit the 300 mark. (Currently, Blue Bloods is on pace to fall a few shy of the entirely symbolic, round-number milestone.)
“Tom [Selleck]’s got something going on,” Jbara claimed. “He literally goes, ‘I’ve got a couple tricks in my bag that I’m going to present to the network.’
“I think I can say without teasing anyone that that is a something that’s being considered,” Jbara added.
Three episodes into the season, Blue Bloods has led Friday in total audience twice, with only its premiere falling just shy of lead-in Fire Country‘s. With Live+7 playback, Blue Bloods is averaging 8.8 million viewers, trailing only NCIS, the Super Bowl-inflated Tracker, FBI and Chicago Fire, among all TV dramas.

Don’t play with me. I’d love to have more seasons. I really enjoy this show and I saw some interviews with Donnie and he got emotional talking about the end. So I also wish for him and the cast and crew that it keeps on going.
This has been one of the best cop/family shows for a long time. It is very depressing to see it end. Also, educational in many ways, familiar as well as professional.
Where do we send letters?

I know it’s an expensive show, but c’mon, CBS. You know whatever replaces it will likely not do nearly as well. If NCIS can go 20+ seasons, then BB can hang in there as well, especially since it keeps winning the night in total viewers.
Whatever replaces it might not do as well, but if that replacement is cheap enough, it might be MORE PROFITABLE in the end.
.
That said, I think we are witnessing the end stages of a game of chicken. The cast probably held firm on some salary demands, while the net wanted to cut costs.
.
If the cast takes some salary reductions (in line with what the voice cast of the Simpsons accepted) then I could see the show coming back. I think the announcement that the show was ending this season was the Net showing it meant business. I think the cast is getting line with wanting to come back, and what that return will take.
Cast turnover I believe is the biggest reason why NCIS is still on the air. The only reason why we have this season of Blue Bloods is the cast and I think crew took a pay cut.
If I had to guess if CBS sees Blue Bloods losing money, but they have a less successful show and it makes money the corporation would be fine with the less successful show. If the new show doesn’t make money it will last maybe one season before its replacement airs.
That’s the point I was going to make, but you beat me to it! You can’t weather cast turnover on a show about a nuclear family as easily as you can an action workplace drama. Well said.
It can go on for as long as it can for me. I Hope they can change the minds of the powers that be and give us as many episodes as NCIS, LnO or Grey’s, Long enough to see some great grandkids. Wholesome family entertainment . I love Blue Bloods
Great point!! CBS can continue NCIS, which really lost its step after over 20 years, they can give Blue Bloods another season or more!!
NBC is really pushing it with L&O:SVU. Time for them cops to retire. They have lasted more than most real NYPD cops
.
Blue Bloods has consistently been the #1 Friday show. No need to cancel, see none of the stars want out!!!
Honestly never thought this would be a show I’d follow, and yet approaching 300 episodes, the Reagan’s sitting down to Friday Night Dinner has become comfort TV.
*Sunday Night Dinner
They need to keep doing Blue Bloods until the cast says to quit
Danny should be mentoring Joe and not Jamie
Jamie and Joe were both undercover, so Danny wasn’t in the picture with their story arc.
Good!! The show should be given more episodes to hit that 300 plus mark!!!
It’d be nice for CBS to reconsider as they’re dropping way too many older but still good shows in the next few months.
I thought this was going to be an article about why they’re calling this “the final season” when surely they’re going to structure some kind of spring finale / cliffhanger such that, functionally, it’s “two shortened seasons”. Still wish a reporter had asked someone about that.
Blue Bloods is a terrific show with a superb cast. It should go few more seasons!
Problem is, if they call it “Season 15” for the additional episodes, they’d have to negotiate if they extend “season 14” for an addition few more episodes, the problem is Donny’s got a tour this summer and his availability is limited for most of late spring, early-mid Summer.
Could moving it to paramount+ with shorter seasons lead to cast taking pay cuts as shorter production windows would open them to being able to go other projects while still doing BB?
Perhaps they could do a spinoff – Mayor Reagan
I think that it is a fantastic idea.
It is one of the best TV shows on TV plus SWAT.
Its wholesome Family friendly, reminds us what the family unit is all about and good policing is. It keeps us involved in the story playing out on TV each and every episode. Each episode is innovative and different every time. Blue Bloods never disappoints and has a loyal following.
I’ve been one for 14 years.
How about a spinoff? Turn the show into a workplace drama series, set solely on the police department at work. Cast turnover can be better accommodated and Tom Selleck can appear on a handful of episodes. The kids could be in and out.
I know, this wouldn’t be as good as the original series, and it’s not the concept. But it would be a way to continue to follow the characters and the writers, who clearly have more great stories to tell.
Blue Bloods is a staple in many homes each week.
To take this away is a travesty. The networks always take away the best shows and leave the crappy ones.
Why are you taking Blue Bloods off and leaving idiotic shows on, or Ghost. come on! You have a great show and you want to cancel it?????? What’s wrong with people? Plus, I want to see Danny and Bias together. Like Eddie and Jaime. Erin should be with some nice guy too.
I WOULD SURE LOVEMORE SEASONS OF BLUE BLOODS!!! IT’S MY FAVORITE SHOW ON T.V.!!!
KEEP BLUE BLOOD ON THE AIR. A SHOW WITH GREAT STORIES AND A FABULOUS CAST. ✨️💫👏👏👏👏👏
Love Blue Bloods, especially Tom and Donnie, It can’t go off the air. All u see anymore on TV are stupid reality shows or game shows. BORING BORING IS A KIND WAY TO PUT IT. LETS GET SOME REAL TV SERIES GOING AGAIN AND NOT CRAZY COMEDY SHOWS EITHER
If I were a greedy/diehard fan of Blue Bloods, I would not want to continue this series with an already-dead Len Cariou. Not worth the risk. Nor would I want to continue with main cast members missing too many episodes.
Gregory Jbara could just be bluffing. This is nothing more than typical “Come up with all the excuses you can to get out of going out on top” talk. I can understand Blue Bloods not wanting to wait until a decline in its ratings or annual Nielsen rank. I’m just not a fan of keeping scripted shows going just for the sake of it. It would have been far easier for Blue Bloods to reach 300 if not for the COVID- and Strikemageddon-shortened seasons.
If you must… let Blue Bloods stop at an even 300.
I love Blue Blood! Love the crew! It’s the best show ever!
Blue bloods is great I love the whole cast . I wish I could meet Donnie and Tom . .I Hope that you don’t go off the air you are the best number 1 show that I look at All the time I can’t wait to you come back on TV 💘 . I used to look at it all the time with my dad.pp
