A haven of peace and tranquility in Buffalo. You can rent a pedal-boat and enjoy the water in summer, plus the trails go around the lake and beyond to get some steps in, and who doesn't need to get a good walk in? Plenty of park benches everywhere. Just be sure to please do not litter the area. Litter can blow into the pond and creates a awful image of Buffalo, the Delaware Park, and of all who use the park. It just takes a second to remember to hold on to the trash till you see a trash bin, and dispose of your things properly. Please instruct young ones to do the same; learn by what you see, teach by example!

This place has been a blessing this year of Covid! One of the places you can come and be outside safely.
They took really good care of it this summer, and the lack of cars is a huge plus. Although, now when there is one its a surprise.
You can walk here, cross over the highway and walk around the lake etc. You can make a short walk or a longer hike out of the park experience.
Update 24 2021Helpful 15Thanks 0Love this 14Oh no 0Jan 13, 2018Previous reviewI spend a lot of time in this park, but mostly when there's no snow. However, it is stunning with a fresh snowfall. A great place to take a walk on a sunny winter day. They seem to send the plows though here quickly so the ring road is ok.
With the new slower 198 it's also quieter and more relaxed on that side of the park.
This park isn't only for the summer.
12/UOct 21, 2014Previous reviewCome see Michelangelo's "David". Or drive by it on the Scajaquada. Its located in Delaware Park.
Delaware Park is improving (as if it could, other than getting rid of the highway in the middle). That's why Im updating my review.
This year the park got a makeover. Parts of it anyway. Marcy Casino has reopened with a refurbished interior, a new deck and a brand-new, much more reliable elevator. The Marcy Casino dates from 1901. No wonder she needed a makeover.
The Rose Garden has some work being done now (Oct 2014), which will be done soon. They are repairing some of the columns and cleaning up the rose garden tile areas. So when you come to see Shakespear in the Park next you will experience a "perked up" rose garden.
All those weddings that happen here, better disabled access with the redone tiles and better elevator.
While it looks like parking is going away, they are actually just moving it a little. That will increase the landscaping in the area, and make the parking easier as well.
Delaware Park is still a great place for a run, on either side, although finding the footbridge can be a challenge the first time (ask Colum McCann who recently tried).
The Meadow Side has a road going around it, where cars are allowed only part of the way. Makes for easy traffic regardless of dog walker, race walker, runner, cyclist, rollerblader etc. The Hoyt Lake side path is a little thinner and requires more navigation at times, especially with the cyclists. And the geese.
If you come early in the morning, or after snowfalls, the Meadow is a great place to walk. Just avoid the actual greens if possible. You will be sharing it with some rabbits and perhaps squirrels, and the occasional early morning golfer. If you are at Hoyt Lake early you will be sharing it with a heron or an egret, they seem to take turns, but they both are local birds. You will usually find one standing very still near the edge of the lake looking for breakfast.
Walking towards the Rosa Garden from the lake you will see a whole other area with paths for walking. Heading towards where Rumsey Road and Forest meet, you will find a large field with soccer goals and some bleachers. So there really is something for everyone in different parts of the park. Golf. Soccer. Tennis. Baseball. A coffee stand (Meadow side). A lake to run around or take a paddleboat on. Benches to sit on. A rose Garden. A place to have your wedding or party. And many weekends in the Spring and Summer, a place where running races start or finish.
** And yes, I know the David is a replica, but its a good one :)
A little history -
Delaware Park is the flagship park designed by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux. It was "started" in 1868 and finished in 1876. Its 376 acres, and was renamed Delaware Park. Those acres are divides in 2, as anyone who has visited the park knows. The Meadow side - which is now the golf course is the bigger of the two. The other is called "The Water Park" aptly named with Hoyt lake, which is actually a widening of Scajaquada Creek (hence the name of the Scajaquada Highway).
While the Albright is one gallery on the park, there is also a museum, formerly called the Buffalo Historical Society, now called the Buffalo History Museum. On the other side you will find the Buffalo Zoo.
Delaware Park was entered into the National Registry of Historic Places in 1982.May 4, 2013Previous reviewDelaware Park is an institution in Buffalo NY. While its a large park, its more or less divided into 2 by the 198.
The part near the zoo has a golf course, which appears to be nice and people are often playing. There are water fountains here and there. There are areas you can run your dog. You can also easily visit the zoo while at the park. Just on the other side of Parkside Ave you have Sweetness Cafe (crepes), Fairycakes cupcakes, a pizza place and a 7-eleven.
There are races in the park all the time, weekends and weeknights after works. Its a very busy place as a result. The loop is 1.8 miles around.
There are some basketball courts on the Parkside Ave side of the park. There are many baseball diamonds with organized games.
The road around the golf course allows cars on part but not all, which is great for runners and cyclists.
You can then cross Delaware Ave and go into another part of the park with a nice path for running and a pedestrian overpass to get to the other side of the park. This side of the park has a pond and is the "back yard" of the Albright Knox museum. There are picnic areas here, a casino area for events (think weddings). There are concerts here, Shakespeare in the Park, and many other events throughout the spring, summer and fall.
Its a great place for a nice afternoon walk. - Jordan W.Buffalo, NY1131Jul 1, 2023

I don't think I've ever reviewed Delaware Park but I love it!
Walking my doggos around the ring, playing tennis at the free courts, basketball games, playground equipment, grassy knolls, soccer & baseball fields, rugby games, golf course, zoo...
There is something for everybody... you can hang a hammock between trees and lounge if you don't want activity... you can bring a grill and cook if you're hungry...
People are generally friendly, the dogs are mostly well behaved (it's usually the owner if there is a problem), there is a happiness when you go here in nice days and a calm when it's gloomy out...
Enjoy! Enjoy!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Hannah K.Charlotte, NC840139690Apr 28, 2022
Truly lucky to have such a gorgeous, accessible park nearby! Perfect for a stroll in the sun, or the cold as long as you're bundled up. I've seen many different types of wildlife Including a beaver, turtles, exotic looking fish, and many species of birds and ducks. Also has many tennis courts and a Japanese garden. Definitely recommend!

I love Delaware Park! The only downside to it is how the Scajaquada Parkway sort of splits the park.
As the warm weather kicks up, Delaware Park is buzzing and kicking. There's a golf course and a part of the park by Hoyt Lake that is about 1 mile long which is popular among joggers and picnicers. If you're looking to have a picnic, a casual stroll, a golf game - Delaware Park is a great place to do it. There's even an adjacent Rose Garden with it's own review page on Yelp and during the summer Shakespeare in Delaware Park takes place (how I miss it and hope it will come back in 2022 or sooner!).
The park is designed by Frederick Olmstead (who also designed NYC Central Park and Boston's Emerald Necklace) and it connects some of Buffalo's other parks.Helpful 25Thanks 0Love this 28Oh no 0Jul 31, 2012Previous reviewI love Delaware Park. You can come here to run, cycle, people-watch, relax, enjoy free plays, rent rowboats at Hoyt Lake and even peak at real live Buffalo's (due to part of the parks proximity with the Buffalo Zoo).
There's a running path around a part of the park that's around 1.8 miles. I've done a 12 mile run here while training for the Buffalo Marathon and while it did get a bit monotonous after the 4th loop, it's a great place for those shorter runs. There's usually baseball games or such events going on in the summer along the path and you go around a golf course for part of the path (I haven't gotten hit with a ball yet!).
This is a huge park, designed by Frederick Olmstead (who also designed NYC Central Park and Boston's Emerald Necklace). Despite living in Buffalo for over five years, I still have not explored all that this park has to offer and for that I'm grateful. I'm immensely excited to all the new things I may uncover (such as the Japanese Garden which has curiously eluded me through these years!). - Jul 29, 2020
The park is great, the playground is fun. It needs:
-reunite the two sides of the park (the circle and Forest Lawn side)
-increase the zoo size
-get rid of the golf course- disruptive to families who use the park. At least the baseball and tennis is more controlled!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Brianna W.Buffalo, NY71136322Jul 31, 2021
This review is only intended to review the playground at Delaware park.
I took my little cousins to go to the playground here since it is within walking distance from their home. If you are not aware the playground is located behind the zoo opposite of the zoo parking lot. It's a smaller playground but it is great for younger kids. It's usually pretty busy which is nice so the kids can make friends and interact with each other. For being such a large park I do wish the playground was a little bigger. There is plenty of space for a larger park. Just something for the park association to consider!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0
