The public is invited to the opening reception of the annual Portland Public Schools Student Art Show at City Hall on Friday, May 3 and also to view artwork from the middle school Make It Happen Art Competition, on display at Central Office during the first Friday Art Walk May 3.

DHS 11th-grader Violet Blum Levine has taken first place in Tyler Technologies’ 2024 Maine App Challenge for creating a system for easily scheduling parent-teacher conferences. Casco Bay High School also won an award for submitting the most eligible entries in the contest.

Deering High School's Debate Team recently received high praise at the Maine State House, where Senator Jill Duson commended their remarkable achievements at the State Championship Tournament. Led by talented captains Eli Tuchinsky, Isabella Figdor, Mya Landry, and Violet Blum-Levine, the team secured co-state champion titles in Varsity Public Forum Debate, impressively remaining undefeated. Coaches Krista Simonis and Bilal Hussein guided the team to success, with several members earning spots at the prestigious National Catholic Forensics League National Tournament in Chicago. This recognition underscores the team's dedication and skill in the world of speech and debate.

At its meeting on April 25, the City Council's Finance Committee voted to recommend to the full City Council the FY25 school budget that the Board of Public Education approved on April 9.

Deering High School's Model United Nations club hosted a successful UN simulation in the library. Students representing different countries, tackled pressing global issues, just like delegates at the real United Nations.

The proposed school budget for the 2024-2025 school year is now in the hands of the City Council, which sets for the bottom line of the school budget. On Monday, April 22, the Council voted to receive the $161.4 million fiscal year 2025 school budget that the Board of Public Education approved on April 9.

The evening will feature speeches by senior members of the National Honor Society followed by an awards ceremony for deserving junior students. Dr. Jake Giessman, the principal, will be on hand to present prestigious awards in recognition of the focus and diligence exhibited by these exceptional students.

The Portland Board of Public Education voted on April 9 to approve a $161.4 million FY25 school budget to recommend to the City Council. The Board’s budget centers students by including strategic funding for increased student mental health, reading support, special education and school culture support at the school level. It also supports increased rigor in the classroom, and maintains funding for athletics, extracurriculars, and class sizes. The Board will present its recommended budget to the City Council on April 22. The Council will vote on the school budget on May 20 and send it to voters on June 11.
