"Quantum Leap" follows the adventures of Dr. Sam Beckett, a brilliant scientist who becomes trapped in a time-travel experiment, leaping into the lives of different people throughout history. With the help of his holographic guide, Al, Sam must complete specific missions and correct historical mistakes before he can leap again. The show's premise sets the stage for a series of captivating and emotionally charged episodes, as Sam assumes the identity of diverse characters, each with their own challenges and personal journeys.
What sets "Quantum Leap" apart is its ability to blend thought-provoking storytelling with a heartfelt exploration of human connections. Each episode delves into themes of redemption, love, friendship, and the impact one individual can have on the lives of others. The show's unique format allows for a variety of storylines, ranging from historical events to personal dramas, all seamlessly tied together by the overarching mystery of Sam's journey and the ultimate question of whether he'll ever return home.
The performances in "Quantum Leap" are truly remarkable. Scott Bakula shines in the role of Sam Beckett, bringing a perfect blend of intelligence, vulnerability, and charisma to the character. Dean Stockwell's portrayal of Al adds an extra layer of charm and wit to the series, creating a dynamic duo that keeps viewers engaged and invested in their quest. The chemistry between the two actors is palpable, adding an extra layer of depth to their on-screen partnership.
On the Blu-ray release, "Quantum Leap" is given new life with enhanced picture quality and immersive sound. The show's vibrant visuals and nostalgic aesthetic are beautifully preserved, allowing fans to relive the magic in stunning detail. The high-definition format also highlights the impressive production design and the attention to detail in recreating different time periods. Additionally, the Blu-ray set includes bonus features such as behind-the-scenes documentaries, interviews with the cast and crew, and commentaries that provide fascinating insights into the making of the show.
"Quantum Leap: Complete Series" on Blu-ray is a must-have for both longtime fans and newcomers to the series. Its engaging storytelling, unforgettable characters, and the blend of mystery, humor, and heart make it a true gem in the world of sci-fi television. So, take a leap into time, join Sam Beckett on his extraordinary journey, and discover why "Quantum Leap" has become a beloved classic that continues to captivate audiences to this day!
What makes the show distinctive is that it is as much character driven as it is about the science fiction. The plots are well written and there's a believable amount of conflict. My favorite episodes are two that involve Lee Harvey Oswald where Sam replaces someone who knows Oswald and, later, he replaces Oswald (this was inspired by writer/producer Don Bellasario who knew Oswald when he served in the military).
The series looks pretty good. It's clear no restoration went into the series visual aspects. Some of these are the syndicated versions of the shows meaning the episodes have been trimmed. The leaps at the end of the episodes give that away. The series has speckles and dirt (particularly during scenes involving visual effects) visible. Clearly there wasn't a restoration done for the show but it looks improved compared to the DVD transfers (which probably had the same source). These are not upscaled. These have the original music from the episodes for kudos for both.
The audio is Ok--dialog is usually clear but there is lack of depth & definition. Is it better than the original broadcast versions? Absolutely. It could benefit from a remix however.
Extras? This is Mill Creek. While they have gotten better about including special features from other sets, that isn't the case here. The Australian Blu-ray release included the Scott Bakula interview and a couple of other special features. None of them were included here (although they were on the original Blu-ray first season two disc set).
The packaging is downright bizarre with multiple discs piled on top of each other in two disc case holders. It's not the best design and for a couple of bucks more, I have the feeling fans would have been fine with multiple holders for multiple discs. The outer cardboard case is a flimsy but has nice graphics.
There are no subtitles for the discs which, given the older age of the fans, doesn't exactly make sense.
The show looks decent (although it's not what I would call cutting edge presentation) with Ok audio. For the price, it's a nice set but I would have preferred a bit more care be taken and NOT including the DVD special features was just cheap.
So should you spring for this set or the UK release? The UK release is evidently region b locked. It does have some special features (interviews with Scott Bakula and the late Dean Stockwell but it does have an audio drop out that occurred during the transfer. The UK release features the episodes stretched over more discs allowing more breathing room and less compression artifacts. It’s kind of a wash.
Real hard-shell disc holders, but the "box" in the boxed-set is pretty flimsy. The DVD set had a hard paperboard box, but the paper sleeves scratch the discs. So, I'll take the hard-shell holders, but the box could've been just a little sturdier.
The BluRay image quality is very good. Exceptional compared to the DVDs.
