The day of the Armistice comes again...and with it,my posting in memory
of nobles slain in World Wars.My thanks to Edwin King for sending a list
that I have not fully integrated, but contained some more qualified names
that were not posted last year.I suppose Irish readers might be most
interested in the DeFreyne entries(not new this year).
=-=-=-=-

This is a list ONLY of men who were *killed serving in World Wars* and
held,or if they had not been killed in World Wars would have succeeded to,
British (i.e. UK,GB,English,Scottish,or Irish)
hereditary titles that still exist or have titled relatives
still extant.Plenty of younger brothers, cousins, etc. also lost their
lives...and I have insufficient resources to track titles that died
out thanks to World Wars(e.g. Blythswood).

(I am covering those killed in action and those killed on active
service, but not those who merely "died on active service".
Dying from wounds I count if the war was still on...Sir Ralph
Anstruther,Bt.,was born in 1921 to a father who died the next
month from WW I wounds,that doesn't qualify,nor does the 11th
Duke of Argyll's father dying in 1926 of an illness contracted
in WW I[illness I count as "d.a.s." even if the war was still on].
Nor does being an apparently civilian casualty, like the
6th Baron Auckland,or being "killed by enemy action" like
Lord Kingsale's or Lord Tweeddale's father.)

Nor,on the other side of the coin,do I count those who died as
heir presumptive to titles to which senior heirs were later born.

Ah.........Lou, I think I got it, but I'm not sure. Let's see if I

desertion in the face of the enemy ? Would it include someone shot by
a French peasant in the act of stealing chickens ? How about a death
resulting from syphilis contracted in a French whore house in war time?
And are you sure you have Lord Tweedledales name spelled correctly ? I

Er, no. Those shot for 'cowardice' were invariably 'common' soldiers (and,
as such, beneath Louie's cognisance) - some of whom were barely more than
children.

I heard one particularly harrowing account of an 18 year old who was shot
for desertion. He had joined up (illegally) at age 16, and had served in
some of the most ferocious battles of the war before succumbing to
shell-shock.

This, naturally, was ignored by his 'superiors' (who, themselves, fought so
bravely from their staff positions, well behind the lines) and the boy was
duly murdered by firing squad.

His family demanded his body - and inscribed upon his headstone "He was
amongst the first to go".

It was, indeed, 'Tweedledum' , who fought opposite his Teutonic cousin 'Von
Tweedledee' - as immortalised in the classic rhyme,; "Tweedledum and
Tweedledee agreed to have a battle....." Unfortunately for the working
classes of both England and Germany, these two Noble protagonists felt
compelled to seek assistance in their quarrel....

Really? Let's try a little quiz:

a) Name the chief steward who perished aboard USS Nevada in the Pearl
Harbor attack.

b) Name the bandleader who perished when his plane was shot down over
the English Channel during WW II.

Who is better "remember[ed]"?

Special recognition of the sacrifices of those of high social and/or
military rank is a universal phenomenon. I'm not saying it's good or
bad, I'm sort of indifferent to it.

As to military rank itself, in just about every conflict in history,
officers have been at far greater risk of death than enlisted men. Of
course, very senior officers are generally at substantially less risk.

What did they change it from? The name above is the one the BBC gave as they

Better remembered or better known? Not the same thing. As you can
see from the reaction most people believe it should not be better
remembered just because it might be better known.

Answer c) The Unknown Soldier.

Knowing the names of all the individuals concerned is unimportant.

In this country, we remember *all* the war dead, regardless of

I'm glad to hear that they (the BBC) did that. To get past the British
Legion's criteria (the Legion offically supports the group's aims) that
had to be there as "The WWI Pardons Asociation".

James, I'm going to plead not guilty here. Sure, it's an ugly
question. War is like that. Suggestions that some should be singled
out for honor while others are ignored is ugly also. As is the idea
that some are better than others based purely on accidents of birth.

The 'desertion in the face of the enemy' question is not
inappropriate since the Brits shot 300 of their own for cowardice in WW
I alone. Were NONE of them sirs, dooks and earls ? Perhaps none
were included on Epsteins list because he was ashamed to raise the
issue. Perhaps they were stripped of their titles and THEN shot to
create a false impression in the minds of Brits that only the lower
classes do such things. Since Epstein clearly suggests that he and
therefore WE should grovel before these elitists , it seems only fair
to ask for specifics. The Brit government put the issue on the table.
The shot-at-dawn group was represented on Remembrance Day in London.
Epstein may flinch from this question, but why should we ?

As for the chicken stealers and the and syphilis question, I
think Epstein and anyone else should be ready to admit that we ALL put
our pants on, one leg at a time. And, getting caught with one's
pants down can and does happen to men at EVERY level, in every war.
We are all ALIKE in being weak, frail human beings, capable of great
accomplishments as well as contemptible actions. My remarks were
simply to remind "Epstein" of that fact. And remind him also that any
listing which suggests otherwise is not worthy of attention.
Especially when it's posted under a false name, so that it's elitist
originator can direct the flak to an ethnic group which does not deserve
it.

Bill.

When you find out an entire process was grossly tainted, it's
reasonable to ask that the results of that process be invalidated.
The remedy in this case is a blanket pardon.

There was no "entire process".Individual commanders and court-martials
executed individual soldiers for acts that could not reasonably be
held to warrant execution, but can not be simply treated as if they
were at all times and in all cases nonexistent.

There was a process, and it had no real checks against the authority
of military commanders to execute such sentences, regardless of the
legality of the trials. The exigencies of war may sometimes argue in
favor of a little rougher justice than you and I might expect in the
peacetime world of civilian law, it's true, but there is absolutely no
excuse for carrying out the death sentence in the field. This was the
trenches of WW I, not the constant chaos of Korea or the isolation of
a Pacific Island in WW II.

It's clear from the actions and words of a lot of these commanders
that they were simply lazy and arrogant, and since no review of their
decisions was provided for, the men were simply hauled out and shot.
In some cases, no evidence whatsoever of the charges was even
presented at trial.

That is a tainted system. The only way it might have punished someone
who was truly guilty of the charges against him would be out of sheer,
blind luck. You might as well pick a dozen men at random, convict
them of treason, and execute them. Hey, one of them *might* have been
guilty, right?

In 1915 the expectation of survival of a subaltern on the Western Front was
6 weeks, as against 6 months for the other ranks. To suggest that the
officers were necessarily members of the social elite demonstrates
ignorance of the social makeup of the officer class at the time. Of
that class, the aristocracy represented a small proportion, but higher
than their proportion in the population at large as they were more likely
to enter the army than the navy.

In any case,my compilation of specifically qualified deaths of aristocrats
was designed to show the quantity in which aristocrats died in action.

You're wasting your breath. Half the English aristocracy were members
of the Beerage and thanks to the system in that country, most peerages
are either revived for a new title holder or are of recent origin.

For proper aristiocracy you have to look to Scotland's pre-Restoration
aristiocracy, or to people such as the Scrope family of northern
England, who were Kings in Saxon times, lords in the Middle Ages and
commoners today because of always resisting the Crown, yet have more
British royal blood in their little fingers than most families today.

Away with these johnny come latelies! They're nothing more than
glorified tradesmen. No one is an aristocrat until he's at least the
20th of his line.

Well,here's my list again.
Please go through it and tell me who you think most qualified.

\=\=\=\=\=

This is a list ONLY of men who were *killed serving in World Wars* and
held,or if they had not been killed in World Wars would have succeeded to,
British hereditary titles that still exist or have titled relatives
still extant.Plenty of younger brothers, cousins, etc. also lost their
lives...and I have insufficient resources to track titles that died
out thanks to World Wars(e.g.

Roger Casement, although hanged for treason, was not a spy.

My great uncle's was. Sadly for the rest of humanity, it wasn't fatal.
Indeed, being the swine he was, he managed to twist as he fell and
shot the man right between the eyes. Always was an excellent shot -
good chap to have along in a tight spot, but a real bastard otherwise.

It helps to remember that despite his Washington D.C. upbringing, Gore
is a genuine son of the Old Confederacy. While this may come as a
surprise to some of our european readers, the South still clings to the
practices learned of old from the English aristocracy. Specifically, in
most parts of the American South it is not only socially acceptable,
but actually legally required that a person marry his or her first
cousin. While it should also be noted that George. W. also hails from a
Southern state, he is a relatively recent transplant. Can you imagine
what a Christmas that was? George the elder sitting around the tree
with his tykes watching with glee as G.W. received Texas and Young Jeb
opened up the State of Florida? What that family lacks in the way of an
authentically Southern Family Tree (noteworthy for its lack of limbs),
it more than makes up for in new-moneyed nobility attitude. A classic
example of the new American practice of grand bourgoise purchase of
titles, the Bush family was a natural for a run against another
aristocrat like Al.
