Anderlecht spokesman David Steegen published an apology on Sunday on behalf of the team's newly signed Egyptian midfielder, Mahmoud "Trezeguet" Hassan, who posted a doctored photo on Instagram that blurred out the faces of female fans welcoming him to the club.

Hassan, nicknamed Trezeguet due to his resemblance to former France striker David Trezeguet, joined Anderlecht on a season-long loan from Cairo giants Ahly earlier this month.

The 22-year-old recently shared a photo of Anderlecht fans welcoming his arrival to the team, but blurring out their faces. Some fans considered the censorship to be offensive.

"Trezeguet didn't mean to hurt anyone," read a statement by Steegan on the club's official website on Sunday.

"He quickly removed the photo and apologised for it," the statement added.

Trezeguet, a product of Ahly's youth academy, scored five goals and created six others in 31 Premier League appearances last season when the Red Devils finished second behind arch-rivals and winners Zamalek.

He also helped Ahly win the 2014 league title and African Confederation Cup.
