Singer Steve Lawrence has died after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

The news of his demise was confirmed by his son David.

"My dad was an inspiration to so many people. But, to me, he was just this charming, handsome, hysterically funny guy who sang a lot. Sometimes alone and sometimes with his insanely talented wife," David wrote in a statement.

"I am so lucky to have had him as a father and so proud to be his son. My hope is that his contributions to the entertainment industry will be remembered for many years to come."

Lawrence met his wife in 1953 when he was hired for Steve Allen's local New York late night show. The two fell in love and started working on musicals together. They formed the music duo Steve and Eydie then later married. They went to record several songs together, including the remake of Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun.

Gormé died in 2013. At the time, Lawrence issued a statement, saying, "Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing. While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time."

The couple's son David is a music composer. His work includes the score for High School Musical. He is married and has a daughter named Mabel.

Lawrence and Gormé other son, Michael, died in 1986 from an undiagnosed heart condition.
