This groove reminds me of the sound of Oakland California in the seventies, when the Latin influence and the R&B groove came together. It’s part of the American popular music tradition where the downbeat meets the clave, where funk meets Fania, where the Caribbean meets the Mississippi. But I have never heard the sound of steel drums and chromatic harmonica together quite in this way, so although the roots of the song might run deep, its branches stretch in some new directions too.
