Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, CI, GCVO, CD (Margaret Rose; 21 August 1930 – 9 February 2002) was the only sibling of Queen Elizabeth II and the younger daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
Margaret was frequently portrayed by observers as a spoilt snob who was prone to cutting remarks and hauteur.
Because Mary was born a princess with the inferior “Serene Highness” style, and Margaret was a “Royal Highness” by birth, critics alleged that she even looked down on her grandmother, Queen Mary.
However, there is no sign of conflict between them in their letters. Later in life, the Princess suffered from illness and a handicap.
Princess Margaret started smoking cigarettes when she was just a teenager and smoked heavily for many years after that.
Princess Margaret experienced a nervous breakdown in the 1970s and underwent treatment for depression from Priory Clinic physician Mark Collins.
Later, she developed pneumonia, laryngitis, and migraines.
Princess Margaret underwent surgery to remove a portion of her left lung on January 5, 1985; the procedure was similar to what her father had undergone more than 30 years previously.
Princess Margaret stopped smoking in 1991, but she kept up her heavy drinking.
