Jewellery from the coffin of Countess Palatine Dorothea Sophia of Palatinate-Sulzbach (1588-1607)

Dorothea Sophia of Palatinate-Sulzbach (1588-1607) was the daughter of Count Palatine Otto Heinrich of Palatinate-Sulzbach (1556-1604) and Dorothea Maria of Württemberg (1559-1639), whose 13 children found their final resting place in the Lauingen royal crypt. The princess, who died at the age of 19, was laid in her tin coffin on silk and velvet pillows filled with spices and herbs. She wore a green silk padded robe with silver trim, white silk stockings, black leather shoes with green ribbons and a long black velvet "cloak" over it. Only two velvet sleeves have survived from the magnificent clothing.

Dorothea Sophia was the only one of the Palatine couple’s children to be buried with jewellery. Her grave goods included a silver woman’s belt with lion heads, a bracelet with the motif of fede hands (clasped hands), a commemorative ring and a two-piece golden clasp with rubies. The small prayer book that lay under her right hand had already rotted away by the time the coffin was opened in 1781.
