She’s 80? Gorgeous posture.

I get Beatrix and Benedikte confused sometimes

They seem to engage with people more than other royal families. Like they actually get involved and start packing food boxes.

Did Joachim and Marie move back to Denmark after their sojourn to the U.S.?

No, Marie was in Denmark specifically for her events 👍

Gotcha, thanks!

as a side note

the man with the cane on pic 12 is count ingolf, margrethe’s cousin, who would’ve been king today if there hadn’t been a constitutional change in 1953. ingolf and his brother christian married commoners and lost their titles as princes, so now they're both called count of rosenborg. their sister princess elisabeth on the other hand never married, just so she wouldn’t have to lose her princess title.

both ingolf and margrethe have called the 1953 act of succession "a difficult time" for ingolf's father knud, hereditary prince of denmark, and "a difficult time for the family". ingolf also said in 2010 that he himself has "gotten used to it" re: that he wasn't supposed to be king anyway.

nowadays prince knud is mostly known because of the saying “one more time for prince knud”, a saying that is used when having to repeat something because it wasn’t understood (the implication being that those who didn't understand are slow). so now prince knud is synonymous with being dim-witted.

Sorry to be a little slow myself (one more time for commoner mewley ha ha) - but what was the 1953 change? I wasn’t sure if that was related to him marrying a commoner, or allowing women to ascend, or something else? Thanks for sharing!

Prior to 1953 Denmark had male-only succession, so Margrethe and her two sisters couldn’t inherit. The 1953 change was to male-preference primogeniture to include Margrethe and her sisters, but still allow for a potential boy to be born to King Frederick and Queen Ingrid. It was finally changed to absolute primogeniture (oldest child is heir regardless of gender) in 2009.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure I heard that it was Margrethe's mum ingrid that started that rumor about the rosenborgs being intelligence challenged? How true is that though?  I also read a comment on the court jeweller yesterday (an article about alexandrine) that stated that Knud and Frederiks (Margrethe's dad) relationship never recovered from that change in succession law thing.

Edited

the story goes that prince knud and his wife were watching a ballet but they apparently hadn't seen a risque and very talked about scene (something to do with a bath tub, i believe) so the dancers performed it again in front of them and a journalist. of course, the next day the newspaper had an article about the episode and that where one time more for prins knud was first was introduced. a year later a revue song had one time more for prins knud as the chorus and it apparently became a hit. they lyrics is just repeatedly about him being a pervert and slow.

but i've read that ingrid was the one pulling the strings in the family, and her work is big part of why they're still popular. she made friends with politicians - including left wing republicans - and included the media in their life, so in that way she modernised their way of presenting themselves and kept them relevant. there are Many Many photos and recordings of their "everyday family life" from the 40s and 50s, and that whole bicycle monarchy thing is because of ingrid.

there have always been rumours that she played a part in the change of the act of succession, though there's no proof of it. but prince knud apparently called her king ingrid and mrs. king in private because of it lol.

what is it with the Queen Mothers and their holding of much of the power behind the throne. Queen Ingrid from her husbands accession (or even prior) up to around the mid 1990s. The Queen Mother from the mid 1930s up until not long before her death in 2002, i would say they saved their respective monarchies.
