Funeral of Danish Count Christian of Rosenborg

The funeral of Count Christian of Rosenborg (1942-2013) was held at Lyngby Church today. Count Christian (formerly Prince Christian of Denmark) was the son of Prince Knud (who was a younger brother of King Frederik IX) and was a cousin to Queen Margrethe. He and his older brother Ingolf were in line to inherit the Danish throne until changes to the Danish succession Act in 1953 allowed for women to inherit. Christian was a naval officer like his father and uncle and retired from the Royal Danish Navy ten years ago. He and his wife Countess Anne-Dorthe were fixtures at the big royal events before their health began to deteriorate a number of years ago.

The funeral was attended by Queen Margrethe who repeated an elegant black straw hat with wide silk band around the crown.

Princess Benedickte wore an embellished black straw hat with a slightly raised brim on one side.

Princess Marie repeated the dark grey Garbo hat she wore last October for the Slovakian state visit.

Princess Astrid of Norway also attended. She wore a black hat with rolled brim, veil and flower at the back.

Countess Sussie of Rosenborg, wife of Christian’s brother Ingolf, wore a black straw hat with raised brim, flat crown and poof of feathers at the side.

Count Christian’s three daughters, Countess Camilla, Countess Josephine and Countess Feodora welcomed guests to their father’s funeral. Each wore a black straw hat with modest detail.

  1. I have been reading this blog since last year and just love it. I think the Danish princesses often have the most beautiful hats. Princess Benedikte, Princess Marie and Queen Margrethe look very elegant today.

  2. The hats today were all very nice. Thank you for not posting pictures of the family crying. I’ve seen that on some other blogs and it is very insensitive and disrespectful.

    • Indeed. I also noticed that when there is a funeral, royal hats suddenly become retrained and much more elegant. I wish they would be restrained and elegant all the time.
