Frightening, Intriguiging, and Original...Every Episode Exceeds Expectations....

It has been a long time since I've watched a vampire movie or television series that was even remotely scary. I think America has had its fill of sweetie-pie vampires who date --rather than eat--the mortal characters they cross paths with. This series is unique in that the vampires--or Strigoi--are anything but compassionate, noble, or friendly. They are instead cold, ruthless, mindless, physically repulsive and bloodthirsty killers; i.e-the stuff of nightmares. At last Vampires are doing what they do best, namely scaring the Hell out of their audiences. If I had to describe the nature of The Strain series, I think it would be a cross between Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot' and Richard Mathesons 'I Am Legend.' Guillermo del Toro is known for his inventive mind and his vivid sense of imagination and in my opinion his television series, 'The Strain', has breathed new life into a tired genre. It has been revealed on the Internet that the plot of the first two seasons will be based on the first book of the three book Strain trilogy. I have to say that I really admire the creative energy del Toro invested in the fictional mythology of his series. Much of the mythology is loosely based on the apocryphal books of the Bible, and some of the history has been revealed to us already. We have learned early on that the Strigoi inhabiting the body of the Polish Nobleman Josef Sardu (The Master) is the eighth and presumably youngest of the 'Ancients'. This must mean that in the beginning, many thousands of years ago, there were eight Strigoi. The Master appears to be the rebellious and unruly one, for the other ancients have decided to enlist the help of his enemies (vampire and human) to destroy him before he has a chance to create his new 'world order.' I have already become attached to many of the characters. Fet is my favorite do-gooder thus far. He is the least flawed among the group of rebels and most fit to assume the mantle of the aged Setrakian and grapple with the Master. I also am enormously entertained by Richard Sammels portrayal of the vile Tomas Eichorst, presently chief among the Masters lieutenants. What an amazing actor Sammel is! What I don't like about the series are the love triangles. If the plot follows the book trilogy even loosely, there will be several in the future and this is something I am NOT looking forward to. Eph and his vamped-out wife Kelly (newest of the Masters lieutenants) will soon be engaged in a lengthy tug-of-war for the heart, soul, and mind of their bratty son, Zach. I think this detracts from the story in many ways, yet I can understand how some people might appreciate its relevancy in the storytelling process. The Strain has suffered much unfair criticism lately from viewers comparing it to the enormously popular AMC series, 'The Walking Dead.' TWD is an incredible show, but much of the 'love' fans have for TWD is based on their affection for one or another of its main protagonists, developed over several seasons. Our band of admirable protagonists in 'The Strain' have yet to earn the respect that comes from devoted fans over time. While I love the gritty reality of TWD, I prefer the unpredictable thrills of a vampiric--as opposed to Zombified-- apocalypse. Del Toros 'The Strain' is a far different reality of an apocalyptic Earth in the not-so-distant future. This show really kindles my imagination and makes me look forward to the next episode, the Hallmark of quality television in my opinion. I cannot recommend this show highly enough. Suspend your disbeliefs and predjudices and be prepared to be entertained.

I want to give it 5 stars, but i cannot. The first season was so full of story and never lagged. Season 2 dragged, miserably for the first about 5 episodes. I was so disappointed. I also understand the change of child actors, since this season picks up where the last one left off, but it's so completely obvious, that it makes it frustrating, not to mention the sudden change of attitude (seriously, it's like night and day, which didn't help the transition).
There is a ton, and i mean a ton of pointless filler and boring character development, while it does have some amazing character development from last season, a lot of other characters get left in the dust (mainly Nora, mostly Nora). Some of the developments later in the season for different characters are amazing, particularly Abraham Setrakian and Thomas Eichhorst , but they rushed through it, while dragging on scenes with a certain completely dull character Nikki. (from this point on SPOILERS may occur)

There was a ton of unnecessary relationship drama in this season, it took up a on of screen time and ate into what could have been huge scenes. The fight scenes were beautiful as usual, but in some cases they decided to gloss over some plot to use up screen time for once again relationship drama. There was a new city councilman, Justine Feraldo, she is amazing, I loved her character, I felt like her development was interesting. Under utilized, again .
For one of the most ridiculous additions to the show is a character named Coco, every single scene with her had me fighting back laughter (and it wasn't meant to be comedic), Maybe they wanted to show a human side to Eldritch Palmer, but went about it in all the wrong ways. Instead the scenes with Eldritch and Coco fall completely flat, useless and a terrible waste of a good actress.
Did I leave out that Eph's drinking problem comes back? Because it does.

It does have some seriously high points, there were a bunch of episodes that reminded me of the wonderful season 1. However, for a 13 episode season, with only about 4-6 stellar episodes, it is a bit upsetting.
I still love this show, the finale was great (despite one scene. Ugh, ugh.) But the season wasted a ton of talented actors and actress' and instead decided to focus more on boring subplots instead of the main plots. I'll be curious to see where it goes.

Great premise, terrible cliches abound

Okay, so coming off our season 1 binge, my husband and I caught up to the last few weeks of this show. I love it, but I hate some parts of it at the same time. However, the unique premise and the take on vampires makes up for it, and it's a great summer show to pass the time with. That's why it gets 4 instead of 3 stars. Unfortunately, it seemed to fall into a few plot devices, like Eichorst attacking, almost getting killed, and then escaping. We also had issues with them changing actors for Ephraim's son, Zack. Now, I understand actor changes between seasons, or even pilot episodes, it happens. However, the new Zack was just plain horrible. Children in post- or pre- apocalyptic shows can be difficult to empathize with. Most of the times, they're a nuisance, or at the very least used to propel the plot forward. However, the character direction for Zack was: sullen, angry, sullen, and more anger. The child does not have a good range and I feel season 1's Zack could have been given a chance to show his anger toward's Ephraim. So, when SPOILERS SPOILERS HERE -- Zack decides to leave with Kelly, you're a little pissed, especially when he had some bonding (however forced) with Nora. We were also disappointed in the ending of the season finale. It felt a little underwhelming when compared to the season 1 finale, but it did do the job for us wanting to see more. Here's to hoping season 3 gives us some fun craziness and more book deviations (I haven't read the book, but I kind of want to now) to keep the whole audience guessing. I'm hoping for Eichorst to meet his end, Zack to get bitch slapped Game of Thrones style, and maybe Dutch and Fet just get together and stay that way.

Die Staffel wurde ab fsk16 geliefert. Habe mich eh schon gefragt, warum die bluray ab 16 ist, und die DVD ab 18...Finde es daher total in Ordnung. Ab 18 ist diese Serie auf jeden Fall nicht! Sollte man dann mit in die Beschreibung schreiben und in den Fotos anpassen und richtig stellen. Die Serie ist an für sich gut. Ab und zu wird sie ziemlich langweilig... Und wie die ganzen Bewertungen hier schon voraus sagen - der kleine Sohn nervt einfach. Dies kann ich leider nicht verneinen. Die Charaktere sind generell meiner Meinung nach etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig... Beeinträchtigt die Serie auch ganz schön. Ausserdem sehen die anscheinenden,, Vampire" eher wie Zombies aus, auch die Gehweise errinnert mich eher an Zombies. Aber im Großen und Ganzen ist die Serie echt sehenswert. Bin mit der zweiten Staffel auch noch nicht ganz durch, aber die 3. und 4. Staffel sind schon im Anmarsch.
