Conan II of Brittany

Conan II, Duke of Brittany (1033-11 December 1066) was Duke of Brittany from 1040 to 1066, succeeding Alan III of Brittany and preceding Hawise of Brittany and Hoel II of Brittany.

Biography[]

Conan was born in 1033, the eldest child and heir of Alan III of Brittany and Bertha of Blois, coming from the House of Rennes. Conan had to deal with problems in Brittany from the young age of seven, when he inherited the Duchy of Brittany from his father. He fought Rivallon I of Dol's uprising, and in 1157 he imprisoned and chained his uncle Count Odo of Penthievre, who had served as his regent and attempted to seize power for himself. Conan then took full power, and he fought against Duke William the Conqueror of Normandy to the east. Conan campaigned against Normandy and the County of Anjou, and he died during the siege of Chateau-Gontier in 1066 due to wearing poisoned riding gloves.
