This 3-CD, 73-track set presents, for the first time ever on a single edition, all existing sessions featuring the singing of Dinah Washington with bands conducted by Quincy Jones, who was also responsible for most of the arrangements on these dates. Ranging from 1955 to 1961, the sessions include the complete contents of the classic albums For Those in Love (Emarcy MG-36011), I Wanna Be Loved (Mercury SR-60729), and The Swingin’ Miss “D” (EmArcy MG-36104), along with various other tunes issued on singles. Contained here are her unforgettable renditions of “Mad About the Boy”, “Blue Gardenia” and “I’ll Close My Eyes” (the latter two were selected by Clint Eastwood for the soundtrack to his movie The Bridges of Madison County).

DINAH Was Her OWN "Arranger"

Now this was an INTERESTING purchase for me. I loved Dinah Washington from the first time I heard "What A Difference a Day Makes" on the radio (which was, believe it or not, before I even graduated from high school in 1961 ------ yeah, you really DO have an "OLD Legend Lover" here!) She just had a quality in her voice, in her delivery, in her nuances and diction and vibrato, that made her incomparable at the time, and still does today 60 years later. And with all I've read about Dinah through those years it has become obvious that most fans automatically give Quincy Jones credit (or Bitter Blame by many!) for bringing in those violins and soft background vocalists that apparently kidnapped Dinah from the hallowed world of JAZZ to a "cross-over" vocalist who actually became famous and had HITS! Well, the latter is my own PERSONAL favorite, so I've always thanked Mr. Jones for the singer's transformation ----- until I bought this 3-CD set of ALL the Jones & Washington sessions, with her singing and him making the arrangements and/or conducting the band. There may be a few of her "classics" in there ------ but not ONE of the only Washington albums I consider absolutely perfect, absolute CLASSICS. Those began (for me) with the aforementioned "What a Difference" and then "Unforgettable" and "September in the Rain" and "Dinah Discovered" which wasn't released until after her death around Christmas of 1963. In her final few years her extraordinary voice had deepened and strengthened and gained an earthier quality that was "sweetened" somewhat by those violins and background choruses! And Quincy Jones, according to the notes, did have "something" to do with her pure jazz recording of "Mad About The Boy" in 1952 as well as the masterpiece version of Noel Coward's sensual, humorous, bitter ballad she re-recorded in 1961 (and which I didn't have the thrill of hearing until the "Dinah Discovered" album after she had left us.) So while Mr. Jones did have some involvement in her "greatness," it was that incredible voice of hers that truly made her "The QUEEN of the Blues"!

Without the context of album, it is difficult to understand the cuts that belong together. Many are first rate example of Ms Washington at work; others are more filler than classic efforts.

It’s too bad she did not have a larger discography; song books a la Ella, for example. She was so very, very good and died much too soon.
