    Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr. is best known by his stage name ‘Common.’ He is an American hip hop artist, actor, poet, and film producer. Common was born March 13th, 1972 in South Chicago, Illinois. His mother had her doctorate degree in education and his father was a former ABA Basketball player who pursued a post -ABA career as a youth counselor. Common’s parents divorced when he was 16 and remained with his mother in Chicago. He attended Luther High School South where he and two friends formed a rap group that opened for artists like Big Daddy Kane and NWA. He attended Florida A&M University for two years studying under Business Administration. He released a single called “Take it EZ” that appeared on his first album Can I Borrow A Dollar? (1992). The single and the album gave Common an underground buzz that he has kept until even today. That said, he has also had commercial success, especially from his 2001 album, Be.

    Common in an interview with afro.com on religion, “I’m a Christian. I believe in God, and I’ve been a member of that church, Trinity United Church of Christ since I was 8. I don’t live in Chicago anymore, so I don’t get there regularly. But I believe God exists in us all, so I don’t knock any other religions. I respect anyone with spiritual beliefs in a higher being.”

    Common was a big supporter of Barack Obama and was even invited by to perform there! However, this was a controversial invitation and many people were outraged that a rapper was invited. The New Jersey police were extremely upset when they heard the news. Famous politicians like Sarah Palin tweeted, “”Oh lovely, White House …”. Karl Rove called Common a ‘thug’ and said he advocated the assassination of Bush during his presidency. Common tweeted back, “So apparently Sarah Palin and Fox News doesn’t like me.” He then posted to his Facebook page, “”Politics is politics and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I respect that. The one thing that shouldn’t be questioned is my support for the police officers and troops that protect us every day. Peace yall.”

    He loves acting and inspiring people. He said he would be a teacher if he wasn’t a rapper. Common enjoys helping people and has stated that he doesn’t drink or smoke. His healthy lifestyle is about living with all things pure which gives him a positive vibe.

    He shortened his name to just Common after a lawsuit by a band claiming to have the exclusive trademark for “Common Sense.”

    His father remained mostly in Common’s life and even got him a job working for the Chicago Bulls during his teen years.
