      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Colossal's singular strangeness can be disorienting, but viewers who hang on may find that its genre-defying execution -- and Anne Hathaway's performance -- is well worth the ride.

Heather S the twists and turns are very interesting...but ultimately are just weird and the piece does not hold up Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review Harry N At first glance, it didn't look like much - a little weird actually, But without giving anything away, once I started thinking about what I was seeing, I grasped both the psyxhological and entertainment value. And, of course, Anne Hathaway was her usual great self. I loved it so much that I bought the DVD to keep and have re-watched it a couple of times so far. If enough people would actually see it, Colassal has the ability to become as big a cult classic as Rocky Horror Picture Show, but without the music. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/24 Full Review Logan D Gloria is a jobless party girl who returns a failure to her hometown. Coincidentally, a monster not seen in Korea for 25 years returns to that city and Gloria learns she can control it. I recall seeing previews for this and thinking it was a cute comedy and wasn't too interested. But since it's score was so high on RT and it features a Kaiju I thought I'd give it a chance. I was pleasantly surprised this film has far more depth than I anticipated. Dark themes as alcoholism, at least social, and manipulative relationships are portrayed and there are some very dark turns. The climax had me audibly surprised. An emotionally captivating film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/24 Full Review Alec B Joyously weird. Vigalondo successfully upends the clichés of both romantic comedies and kaiju movies. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/03/24 Full Review ARI trash, story line wasnt good at all Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/27/23 Full Review Spikecat 9/100 I may have exaggerated in this review, but it's still atrocious. K. Austin Collins The Ringer Colossal feeld like something of a liberatory tale. Aug 10, 2017 Full Review Angie Han Slashfilm Vigalondo's strong vision, along with sensitive work by Hathaway and Sudeikis, ensures that Colossal never feels like anything other than completely itself. Rated: 7/10 Jun 13, 2017 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times A dazzlingly original fantasy conceit, worked to perfection. Rated: 4/5 Jun 6, 2017 Full Review Anthony McGlynn Vague Visages Introduced as the classic nice guy, Oscar’s arc is not only an ideal foil for Gloria’s journey, but forms the reactive core of the film’s biting take on gender and ego. Feb 6, 2024 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Hooks you in with something quirky and inventive, only to show you how incredibly human it is, displaying the gamut that interpersonal relationships can run in the adult world. Rated: 5/5 May 12, 2023 Full Review Erik Childress The Friendship Dilemma Podcast The kaiju began as a metaphor but the way Nacho Vigolando turns it on his head with the personal struggles beset by alcoholism is funny and unnerving in equal measure. Anne Hathaway & Jason Sudeikis give career performances here. Rated: 4/4 Sep 29, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
