THE PREDICTION
World number three Coco Gauff is still struggling to control her serve but she has blasted past Arantxa Rus and Dayana Yastremska, conceding just five games so far, to look a genuine threat to the Madrid Open title. The 20-year-old finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros in 2022 to prove her credentials on clay but her incredible transformation on the late hardcourt swing last summer was the making of her, with victory at the US Open as a teenager fulfilling her destiny as a prodigal talent.
World number 20 Madison Keys is also through to the round of 16 without dropping a set after ousting last year’s quarter-finalist Irina-Camelia Begu and hard-hitting Liudmila Samsonova but she is only just back from a lengthy injury absence to warrant caution. The pair share a tight 2-2 head-to-head record but Gauff has earned at least a set in three of that four, with Keys’ only straight sets win coming en-route to the Eastbourne International title last summer. Back Gauff to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
