Biography
Beginning as a mutual interest between brothers Gene and Terrence Thornton and up-and-coming superproducer Pharrell Williams, Clipse first spent four years honing their skills and securing a record deal. Unfortunately, their would-be debut album Exclusive Audio Footage was shelved after poor reception for their lead single "The Funeral," and Clipse were released from Elektra Records.
By this time, Williams had become successful enough to start his own record label, however, and so the group was quickly brought back into the picture with their 2002 release Lord Willin'. While each of the record's singles were hits this time, the group was again caught up in label drama as Star Trak Entertainment's parent label Arista Records was folded into Jive Records. When the dust settled, Clipse had been severed from Star Trak and forced to remain with Jive. As their sophomore album neared completion in 2005, the label began to completely ignore them in favor of other acts on the roster. This lead to the formation of the Re-Up Gang and Re-Up Records, through which the group would release their critically acclaimed We Got It 4 Cheap (2005, 2008) mixtape series.
Eventually, Jive agreed to a joint release of Hell Hath No Fury (2006) between themselves and Re-Up Records, and it received rave reviews. A few months later, the group revealed they had finally won their release from Jive.
